PatK100
Hello Chaps I know this will start off some healthy debate but I recently brought a Franchi Prestige three shot auto, I wanted a light weight gun to compliment my Browning O/U which I find a little heavy if I am hawking it abouit all day. The Franchi is OK but it a little bit clunky and often jams if you do not use the right cartridges. Now I am used to the semi - I thought I would trade the Franchi in and get something slight more upmarket, I would want to trade the Franchi and pay around another £600 to £700 - the gun will mainly be used for clay shooting and the odd game day, I live on the North Wales borader. What gun would you suggest and why and where would you go to purchase. Many thanks Pat

Many thanks Pat Winchester makes a nice light weight gun in u&o and well priced, I guess you won’t want an auto to use on your game days? majordisorder
Keep your eyes peeled for a s/h Benelli Super Sport, there's been a couple come up around the £1000 mark over the last 6 months or so. Possibly the ultimate clay buster semi auto. I've got one and love it to bits, you can see my ongoing review of it here

casts_by_fly
If I were buying a brand new semi right now, I'd go try out a Beretta 391 and a benelli (either ultralight or monfeltro). I've handled both and they are pretty slick. That said, which Franchi semi action type do you have? I don't know the prestige. If it is the gas operated then is shouldn't jam at all. If it is inertia the same. If it is long recoil (AL48 or franchi hunter style) then jamming tells me that it needs a deep clean and it will eject just fine. When the long recoil guns jam (i.e. the cartridge starts to eject but gets caught in the ejector port and stops the bolt traveling forward) it normally means the firing pin spring and main bolt spring (not the recoil spring) are dirty. It happens when the barrel recoils and is able to get the action most of the way open, but can't get it the last 10 mm or so. That's a result of a gummed up spring inside. If the cartridge is just starting to open the action but not enough to start to eject the cartridge or trip the next cartridge from the magazine, then it is underpowered cartridges and/or a dirty mag tube and wrongly adjusted friction ring. Some cartridges won't eject no matter what you do (aside from cutting the recoil spring). A local shop brand 24 gr cartridge is really soft and won't spit them out. It is nice on the clay stands since you don't have to pick them up afterwards but it also means singles only (or you can shoot doubles if the second bird gives you enough time to drop the gun, cycle the action, and remount. I did a few of those on report pairs). Thanks, Rick
