New permission, big crow problem

Hi guys, I'm rather new to the black stuff, so what's the best way about getting the numbers down quick so the farmer can see im doing my bit, this is a new permission and will be a very good 1 for me as it's on my doorstep, so I'm eager to please and do a good job ? Is it worth decoying ? As all I have are pigeon decoys, I have a rotary Which has dead bird cradles. And could put some tights over the pigeon deeks. I presume 32 6's will be ok ? I have 2 guns with fixed chokes one at 1/4 and 1/2 the other at 3/4 and full, which would be the best to take ? I shoot just as bad with both guns. Any help is great and even a day out could be a possibility depending on what the farmer says.

Find out where they are feeding, get there early in the morning and put out a few decoys, make sure you have a really good hide or they will spot you instantly. Add to the decoys with dead birds as you shoot them. I have managed to shoot some reasonable bags this way. Try dead birds on the rotary, as this sometimes works. Flappers with a dead bird on work well and having a decent crow call helps as well. I would say 32g 6's through 1/4 & 1/2 chokes would be absolutely fine.

Cheers guys, I'll still to te decoys tho, I don't have a ferret and I wouldn't want to keep a blackie alive if it's in pain. I'll make the best possible hide, the farmer is that fed up with them he'd quite happily bring me bales or anything else to hide behind. Although I have a good net, camo, I best crack on and buy a call and a face net then

Are there certain decoys that work with crows ? Like pigeons people say flocked ? Or to a crow is shiney better ?

Is it also worth building a ladder trap and putting that out, at least that way the farmer should hopefully think I'm trying my best.

As a lot have said get there early , but also be aware they feed well mid to late afternoon before roost

One farm i have you will shoot 5-10 early morning but get there at 1-30 and shoot till dusk you average 40 plus :good:

Just like pigeons you need to spend a bit of time watching to get the big bags ?

Hmm maybe more awkward than first thought. Is there any problems with just having a walk around and getting a few flying ones ? I basically have free run on the farm so can go from field to field if need be as they are everywhere. or is it worth going with the air rifle to there roosting spot ?

Interesting to read this as I'm in the same boat with a new permission that has loads of rooks that occupy some spinneys. If we were to bag a few would freezing them and re-using like you do pigeons be a good idea on a rotary and pegged out on the ground?

You might get the odd one by walking around, but their eyesight is so good it wont be easy. If you have access to the roosting woods, get there just before dark and catch them flighting in with a shotgun. It's normally just about dark before they roost so no need to worry too much about a hide.

1st light has always proved good for me. Get yourself a Primos Power crow caller, they are excellent. Crow decoys help bring them in. Also, I use a flapper with crow attached. Normally, the Crows go nuts when they see the bird 'flapping', as they think it could be injured. Floaters also help to guide the Crows into your killing zone.

Camo yourself up as much as possible. Crows have excellent eyesight, and will spot you easily, especially if you don't keep still in the hide etc.

Crow shooting ranks as my #1 in vermin control.

I always take some of my 'kills' home with me, and freeze them down to use next time. Nothing better than a 'real' decoy.

A couple of decoys and a loaf of bread!!!!!

Break the bread up and loosly scatter it in your pattern, go set your hide up and sit and be patient.

I have used this several times and had some really good bags also you can try a dead rabbit with its belly split.

Good luck
