So took the dog out earlier as we haven't done anything for a few weeks, only shot a couple of pigeons but he didn't see this one drop. I left it for about 20 mins then sent him in....please excuse the slightly retarded noises I make. Still at the bucket loads of encouragement stage  not a difficult retrevie by far but nice to get out. Please excuse the video quality to it seems when I post them it drops slightly. And hope the link works. First time I have done it. :good:

nice looking retrieve

my lab almost head butted me coming to the whistle!

i havent had chance to do anything with her for a month because she has just been spayed. how did you teach yours to go so far back? mine will go back so far then turn back to me. i like to let her work her nose but sometimes I must have interferred too much - mine is also 20 months but hasnt had a season shooting yet because she kept coming into season in the middle of theshooting season.

once again nice dog

Just out of interest do you always send her in for a retrevie from your side ? It's a confidence thing i suppose. I am no way a pro dog trainer but had similar issues with mine. ( to the point I would stop him and then give him the back command and he would come running back to be sent from my side) I overcome the distance issue by always making sure that a retrevie was there for the dog to help build his confidence in me sending him out for "something". I used an exercise for 2-3 weeks to get him used to working at distance as follows:

Sat him up ( obviously dog needs to be steady to do this)

Had 3-4 dummies and walked in a straight line away from him chucking one out at 20,40 , and sometimes 80 yds ( making sure to take a peak to watch the throw be marked) then walk back to the dog and past him then wait for a few seconds and send him out.

At first it was a little unorthodox picking up random ones but now he will go for the furthest bird ( unless he winds the bird in the field which I don't mind as it's handy on the marsh in the dark  )

I then used all the direction and other exercises at longer distances and normal distance and after a while it all fell into place. ( go a tad further each time) As a fowling dog for me it's important that at distance he still takes direction but more importantly will use his nose and initiative ( learnt that one evening flight in sideways rain in the dark with a widgeon). He knew were it was better than were I thought it was. If he hadn't used his nose we would have never found it

The exercise (as long as you send them straight)seems to encourage the back command ( or whatever you use to send the dog out) so I can stop him at distance and send him " back" further. Don't worry if after a while she goes out in an arch she will be using the wind to her advantage.

All dogs are different so I suppose it's difficult to pin it specifically for each one, but the dog just needs to gain a bit of confidence in you I think :hmm:. As said I'm no pro but just keep repeating the exercises and keep it fun. :good:
