Zapp
Now this was a first to me.................. Went into the shop the other day to have a feel............and saw a semi auto...........with a bloody drain pipe stuck on it................... A silenced shot gun..................................whats that all about........ do they work........... Very suprised.... :o I'm buying one soon Lancs lad. What you have probably seen is a Hushpower moderated gun. They work on pretty much the same principle as a silencer for a rifle, with a combination of baffles and holes bored into the barrel (peculiar to the silenced shotguns I think). These cool the gasses and muffle the sound, resulting in a much reduced report. The one I'm geting is only a .410 single shot, but some of the permissions I shoot on have areas where it is quite safe to shoot, but could cause a nuisance to people living nearby, and thereby cause embarrasment to the farmer. The air rifle would be useless, as the bunnies sit in long grass and bolt across the clear bit. I'm hoping that the new gun will allow me to gt to grips with them without causing the farmer any hassle. I'll let you know how I get on. lurcherboy
They work very well mate But there is a drawback, once you start shooting with one of them, all your landowners will want you to use it all the time LB
Baldrick
The technology is not just restricted to shotguns. Sub-machine guns such as the MP5-SD5 use that same set-up, as do dedicated suppressed sniper rifles like the Vaime. Not that you'll be coming across either of them soon at your local 'smiths..... dunganick
they are over priced, generally built on agricultural actions (single barrel baikal or mossberg) the mossbergs handle awfully once they have bout a 36" barrel which is about 2" dia. , if you look back in the for sale section you will see how long people keep them. On the upside, they are quiet, they hold their value, so when you find you dont actually want it you wont loose much money. You can have them built for you on the gun of your choice, which is a much better way to do things, i believe the warrener uses a silenced investarm 20b o/u with a hushpower style mod. fitted. This is a much better choice for 2 reasons. firstly you have two barrels not 1 (although the mossberg is 3shot) and secondly as the large silencer is placed over two barrel you dont actually move the top rib too much in relationto where it was originally. where as the single barrel gun will result in the large silencer raising the rib by about 1" which can play havock with the fit. Ive been lucky enough to try most of the models without owning them and i can safely say i will keep my money. They silence well with standard carts and with subsonic carts are deadly quiet, but the triggers are unuseable on the baikal actioned guns ive tried and the mossberg is too long to be used comfortably in the field. If you want one have a custom one made on an old gun.
Hardy
I've got the hushpower 12g single barrel - the fully folding version. It works pretty well for what I wanted it for (bunny control around horses - big bangs are a no no). With subsonic cartidges it's very quiet (its about the same as the 410 version with standard carts) & full choke means you get a nice tight patten at range. Drawbacks are that it is only single shot, the barrel is like a drainpipe! & there is no real rib as such. That being said for the money (paid £200ish 2nd hand) you can't go wrong. I've even taken it down to the clay ground for a bit of fun (as well as to get the hang of it)
miffy
i believe the warrener uses a silenced investarm 20b o/u with a hushpower style mod. fitted. I have used the Warreners silenced 20b o/u a few times. It takes some getting used to when using it as the barrel is so big but once you know how to shoot with it it is a really good bit of kit. I wouldn't part with my cash to buy one unless it was really cheap.
Zapp
Got my moderated webley today! Took it to sporting targets and blasted 25 rabbits (of the clay variety. Ok, I blasted 22, once I had worked the extra lead out). I was using 2 1/2 inch Lyalvale 14g 6's, which arent subsonic, but I was amazed by how quiet thegun was. It sounds a bit like an unsilenced pcp, a sharp "pop". Trying to get hold of a farmer friend who's land is crawling with bunnies at the mo so I can go and do itfor real. I'll let you know how I get on! Pete
roughshooter
I recently looked at a prototype silenced Hugsan pump at Wilcat moderatore. The silencer added no length to the barrel and the sight picture remained the same as a normal barrel!!!!!! Dogs Bits!!! I have a 12g SB Hushpower and it is very effective but I will be buying one of these new ones as soon as they are in production Regards Graham
