humperdingle
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01dd64w On Wednesday... "Observational documentary following John 'Shonnie the Shooter' MacDonald, one of Scotland's top clay pigeon shooters. Shonnie embarks on an eighteen-month journey from his home in the Scottish Highlands to Sydney, Australia where he hopes to qualify for team GB in the London Olympics 2012." Might be worth a watch. aldivalloch
Thanks for alerting us, Humperdingle. I watched the programme and concluded that Shonnie came across as a remarkable young man from a remarkable family - his father, Fergie, is something of a legend in Scottish traditional music. And did you see the scenery around his home? Beautiful. The man lives, works and plays in heaven. But I bet the midgies are formidable! StuC
Just watched this on iplayer. Well worth a watch, came across as a very nice guy
Schern
I watched about 1/2 of it but then had to go and do something else. I thought he came across as a nice guy but thought the narrating was a bit basic. As far as I know it didn't say what discipline he shot at any point, and they kept saying it's a rich man's sport which maybe it is at that level (don't know what competition entries cost) but I think anyone who watched it and was interested in having a go may be put off without even doing any research. It's one of those sports that's as expensive as you make it. I suppose the initial outlay can be a bit of a stretch but I bet if you're not too fussy and shop around or buy secondhand (certainly for the gun) you can get cert, cabinet and gun for £250-300. The way the narration made it sounds was you'd be into 4 figures!
