Blackpowder
Well pleased today as at around 11 am I caught and returned to the river the first fish of the season from the Tweedhill beat on the lower Tweed. A beautiful fresh run fish of about 10pounds in weight, it also happened to be my first ever March salmon. With the river running at April levels and temperature at 47deg the lower beats on the river will now be offering a good chance of sport, provided the current dry weather remains with us. Nor does fishing here cost a fortune the current price being £37 a day plus VAT. Blackpowder

Blackpowder
does ginger know what a springer looks like Does now as he caught number 2 this afternoon. River is just getting in fine fettle for the bottom end, and gin clear as you know. My fish fell to a lightly dressed ED treble size 10. Its very much horses for courses low water coming on so its ideal for the bottom river. Of course I believe that in salmon fishing the best ingredient and fly pattern is Lady Luck. billytheghillie
well done b.p. the junction had 5 fish but not a fresh one amongst them, all auld ones. aye best bet is below coldstream bridge at that height, heard tweedmill were also chipping away at fresh fish. away to do my rain dance now, but i think it will be in vein. Blackpowder I've always fished lower pavillion for a couple of days with my dad for my birthday (around the 27th march) perhaps in future I should go down the bottom never been a fan of boat fishing though. I'm not sure I know that fly u used is it short for something? Tight lines Will
Blackpowder
I've always fished lower pavillion for a couple of days with my dad for my birthday (around the 27th march) perhaps in future I should go down the bottom never been a fan of boat fishing though. I'm not sure I know that fly u used is it short for something? Tight lines Will Nothing wrong with that beat, but as you say it is boat fishing only never fished it but have been angler watching there. It all depends on river levels, Tweedhill where I was yesterday excells in low water conditions, with anything like a foot and over on the Norham gauge fish are less inclined to stop in the lower river. One thing that helped me get a fish so early in the season is that for the first time I was using a modern line, that is a shooting head type with a long floating section and interchangable tips backed by running line for shooting out. With full sinker I used to struggle to lift off and perform a decent spey cast, even using the fast sink tip as I was yesterday casting is pretty easy with only the fast sinking tip to lift from the water. certainly made a difference to my fishing. Do you tie your own flies? If so I coul P.M. the dressing to you. Tight lines for your trip to Melrose. Blackpowder
utectok
Yep I tie my own flies ! Your right to about new lines I fish a skagit these days. Big double taper lines are stylish to cast but skagit goes miles and even I can Spey cast it off both shoulders easily no one said fishing had to be hard

Blackpowder
Well back at Tweedhill again today a bit trying with a fickle downstream wind but casting was just managable. Through the Main Stream again where last week's fish came from and sure enough a rolling head and tail rise by a fish well into mid teens of pounds in weight. It had ignored the modest size twelve treble fly which proved the undoing of last weeks fish. So! Tried a 22mm brass tube heavy dressed. To deep? Changed from fast sink to slow sink tip and resorted to the size 10 fly still no result. Wandered off down stream while a fellow angler cast a spinner through the pool. Still no result. Changed back to fast sink leader and a size 14 dressed treble, much to small for this time of year? First time over it the line drawn tight and following a 15 minute battle landed and returned a splendid spring salmon of around the 14lb mark. Nor was Brian the ghillie far away with a fish to his own rod both morning and afternoon. Blackpowder

Blackpowder
Well 17th fish of the season and personal best from Tweed at 15pounds by the weigh net scales went on to take a 4 pound sea trout later. Fished deep with a 15mm brass bottle tube with heavy cone head on fastest sinking tip of the Airflo set. Two words suffice- well chuffed! Aled
Well done beats my three stockies yesterday! However i'm going to do some serious sea trout fishing this week, the water has at last fallen enough for some night fish. There will of course be the chance of salmon during the last hour of light. Blackpowder
Yes Aled its been a strange season for salmon up here, in some instances the high river levels have helped especially on tribuaries of Tweed, while on the lower beats of the main river angling has been wiped out for two months. Another grilse this morning about five pound, lost one and missed another. Blackpowder
sako751sg
The Deveron has been fishing very well, although the lower beats are struggling a wee bit with too much water puting the fish straight through. I have never seen a July run of fish ever that we have had in the last fortnight, sea troot, grilse and salmon which is a great sign.

Never been seeing a lot of fish, although grilse were in evidence this morning. I suspect that even on tributaries a lot of fish will now be in the upper reaches. Having said that I would much rather fish with 2 feet on the gauge rather than 2 inches. Blackpowder
Aled
Yes strange season, wet weather has brought up quite a few salmon. Plan to start fishing an hour earlier tonight and look for some salmon in those lovely grilse runs before dark proper and sea trout time. Lets hope! Blackpowder
what fly is that? the walkerburn angel? Well only a mid river ghillie would know such a thing existed, well known for its deadly effect where caulds and weirs exist. Blackpowder
Well number 30 for 2012 from the Association water today, 7lb and highly coloured which leaves me one behind the same date in 2011. Also lost a good fish at Tweedhill last week, definately in excess of the 15 pounder during mid summer, but certainly not in excess of 20lbs but a good fish which was bullied for 20 minutes before the hook hold gave way. Now looking for low water levels on Tweed and some more water in the Whiteadder, but then its not a perfect world. Blackpowder
