redthunder
Alrite lads, On one of the farms we shoot on the barley was cut last week its about a 700 acre farm and probaly 200 acres of the farm is Barley its always been a good pidgeon shooting farm with lots of birds but this year only about 100 or so pidgeons have shown up?? me and my mate share the pigeon shooting with two other guys they shot the first day when the combine was out could they have scared the pidgeons off by shootin at large flocks But the last few days huge flocks of crows have shown up feeding on the stubble i would say over a thousand crows the fields are black we've tryed with some crow deeks but after one shot from the hide there gone to the next field any tips to bring them in and bag up just wondered if dead crows on the magnet or flappers would work or are they to clever and craftey for that aswell ?? game_keeper
might be a gd time to build a trap, we are finding that problem and have built 2 massive traps, just today we caught 7, work well as long as you have decoy birds
08shooter
hi mate would forget about the magnet ,too much to carry. go for about a dozen plastic deeks set about thirty yards out facing into the wind, buy a crow call, stand behind the hide and i guarantee you some good shooting. gather up once you see birds veering off and not commiting to the coys, trust me they seldom fail. trap 7.5s work well out to about 40 yds any thing further go for 30 no 6 .hope ive been a help have fun
digger
not having a dig but 7.5s out to 40 yards and anything over go for 6s ? so if he goes for 36g 5s ?? god help the crows if he buys some bb`s

bertie
I heard a pack of frozen mince from the butchers scattered in the killing zone brings them down Yes so does rottweill 36g cartrages! Seriously though all you need is a dozen deeks and most important a good hide, crows are coy birds and are wary at all times!

roe doe
hi red thunder ishoot on a farm with a large acreage of barley in one block the problem is food all over let them feed for a few days. then set up at first light in the area of the field they fed in the day before using decoys and a flapper a good hide and i would not bother with the magnet and get ready for the action just try it it works

Highlander
But the last few days huge flocks of crows have shown up feeding on the stubble i would say over a thousand crows the fields are black we've tryed with some crow deeks but after one shot from the hide there gone to the next field any tips to bring them in and bag up just wondered if dead crows on the magnet or flappers would work or are they to clever and craftey for that aswell ?? How many more times if they're in their hundreds they ain't CROWS! Unless thats what you call ROOKS (or maybe jackdaws) in your part of the world! So many of the tips for decoying crows won't work for rooks. Know your quarry before you try shooting them and you might get better results! Bipolar
I have an Eagle owl and a little owl both work well, the little owl works best with a ripped open bunny or squirrel, tends to attract young rooks and Jackdaws best, Crows stay well back, never tried a glitter ball though? M ROBSON
I was out at 05:00 this morning on a cut strip of barley silage at a hill farm near us. The farmer cut a 10 yard strip through the top end of a half ripe Barley field so he could drive through it and draw silage easier from two fields behind it. The crows have battered into it and eaten about another 2-3 yards in just 2 days!! My dad got a call yeasterday from the farmer and we went out at 05:00 this morning and shot till 08:30, we had 250 carts and ran out!! Finished up with 120+ Rooks/Crows and 7 Woodies, poor average but it was quite windy and the shots were tricky. Got quite a few passing Carrion Crows too being up on the hills. We just put out 6 deeks and then added all the shot birds, I think the key is being where the crows want to feed rather than worrying too much about decoys. Cheers, Mark.
