Graham M
OK gentlemen here's my dilemma. I have taken my 308 down to 19 inches in order to keep the length more manageable with the T8 on the front. Now I know that there may be a problem with unburnt powder if I use a normal load of R15/N150 etc. So does anyone have a pet load that they can suggest that will burn all of its powder in that 19” without pushing the pressures up through the ceiling. casts_by_fly
what bullet weight? rick
cooter
I use N133 for everything up to 150GRN, although I mainly use 125grn Sierra Pro Hunters. For 150grn and over I use N140. They both burn completely before the bullet leaves the barrel.
Vipa
Doesn't really matter if not all the powder is burnt as long as it's not excessive... N135 would be all gone with 155gn bullets.. 43.5 gns... all gone after 18.7" and ballistically efficient... approx 2564fps and nicely within pressure tollerances.. (all from Quick Load) Always work up from 10% below though as your rifle may be different to mine..
Graham M
what bullet weight? rick 150grn.... although I may opt for 130grn if it means I can get more velocity without too much damage. Was hoping for @ 2800fps with the 130's which would suit me better to be able to shoot out to 200yds if needed (although that would be the exception). Have read an article where the shooter cut the barrel down to 16 and used IMR3031 with great results, but as has been said, that was in HIS rifle. Would settle for MV of @ 2700 as most of my shots are in woodland or on the edges. Anyone use IMR3031: It's just one faster than N133 G.M. N140 will give you 2800 fps with a 125 grain projectile and stay in the safe zone

cooter
H4895 is working nicely in my 20" barrel with 150 Nosler ballistic tip. Dont know velocity but anything in the Uk that wants to walk away from it can have my compliments and best wishes. I used H4895 when I first got my .308. I was getting the flame thrower effect with every shot. It looks quite good, but was just powder burning off. Changing to N133 removed the flame thrower and made the rifle a lot easier to shoot. The 125grn Sierras I run are doing 2900fps with a moderate load through a 22" barrel. I have also tried N130 and found no noticeable difference, but I always try to run with a case fill level of 95 - 100% which should give an even burn, and the N130 load was well under this, although there was still a grain or more spare according to QL. Graham M
There was an article in Shooting Times two weeks ago about this very subject by Steve Rawsthorne That's the article I read. Thanks for all the input, and as a result I am wondering whether to carry on using my 150grn Gamekings and Reloader15 (which works very well in my 308) as it is on a par with N140 (1 rate faster) but a little slower than N130. May try N133 when the R15 runs out. G.M.
AndyCM
I'm using N140 in a 16" barrel with Nosler 150g's & Gamekings Seems to work well but I do need to chrono to check fps Cheers AndyCM
Harnser
I only load one bullet now for the .308 . 150 grain soft point powered by 45 grains of vit 140 . The book load is 47 and a half grains of vit 140 . I like to load down a bit from book loads as I have found some of them to be a little bit feisty at times . The above load chronos through my ruger m77 with out a moderator at about 2700 feet per second . All the power in the world for any deer . Harnser .
