bedwards1966
I understand it will need to be sent away for reproofing after being bored out - just be aware of that, it adds cost and time to the job.
humperdingle
Yep, gunsmith job. They might be better putting a multichoke thread in so you can change choke... Quite pricy, i'd have thought, though.

I don't think it needs to be submitted for reproof if you just have some choke removed....any competent gunsmith should be able to do it!
HDAV
no need for a reproof unless the choke goes beyond the original bore (chokes are a constriction so thicker material) There is a larry potter video 2 minute job.... teague do it if your nearby http://www.teagueprecisionchokesltd.co.uk/choke_adjustments_&_specialist_regulating.html or if your brave http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7YQf6YWLaM Edited April 14, 2012 by HDAV

bedwards1966
My father had a choke reamed out some time ago and had to send it for a reproof. I enquired about having the chamber reamed out on an old gun to take longer (modern) cartridge cases and was told it needed a reproof after the work was done, i.e that any work seems to need it proofing afterwards. Maybe some RFD are getting it wrong, or just trying to cover themselves?
HDAV
Maybe some RFD are getting it wrong, or just trying to cover themselves? Chamber i can understand as it would need reproofing for the longer cart, as long as the choke is Bore + 0.00X" then removing material to make choke > Bore it still in proof. When multi-chokes are retro fitted they have to cut deeper than the bore for the threads to allow you a cylinder choke. http://www.teagueprecisionchokesltd.co.uk/choke_adjustments_&_specialist_regulating.html This process involves boring and honing out fixed choke shotguns to the required bore size. IE. From 1/2 and full to improved cylinder and 1/4. It is advisable to submit the complete shotgun, so a pattern check can be made. All gauges can be adjusted, 10 - 12 - 16 - 20 - 28 - .410 This adjustment does not require reproofing Doesn't mean the gun doesn't require reproofing for another reason pitting etc
fenboy
It will cost you more to buy a reamer than it will to take the gun to a gunsmith, they only charge around £50 to alter a choke and if they mess up they will have to replace it , if you mess up then its knackered !!
