john faul
Hi lads , Having just sold my 17hmr for £500 Im in the fortunate position to buy a .223 varminting setup. Ive between 2500k to 3000k to spend on everything this includes scope mod bipod mounts etc. Ive been looking at something like a tikka varmint, or second hand sako possibly, I would prrefer if it was 1 - 8 twist The guns main uses will be informal targets i.e gongs crows rabbits and some fox shooting, I would prefer a high magnification scope. Any suggestions on a setup would be appreciated. manythanks john
bullet boy
You won't go wrong with either a Tikka or Sako!I have a Tikka T3 and it's a superb rifle!I'm also a S&B fan and would also advise to take a closer look at these particular range of superb optics! Loki
Hiya Given that Zeiss's new HT range is due out next month? it may be worth considering these as they have quite a few followers..... If you want to be different then Kapps scopes provide a 30yr warranty (dont know of the small print but do know that the devil is in the detail with some of the other brand names). As a smaller company and product range should be found wanting and likely to have old fashioned 'Customer Service'. Cheers
Browning
Look out for a second hand Sako 75 Stainless Laminate Varmint. Comes as 1 in 8 twist. Mine shoots 50gn Blitzkings and 73gn Berger Match with amazing accuracy. The best I have ever had for a factory rifle. You should be able to pick up a little used one for less than £800. 12borejimbo
Scope wise I would go for either a Zeiss 6-24x56 or a Nightforce 5.5-22x50/56 for long range stuff. Good optics for what you want. Or, sightron are good and priced more competitvely than the other 2 brands and still have the optical clarity. Ive got a Schmidt and Bender and it is very very good, as Bullet Boy (Mark) says, but I dont shoot crows at 500 yards, (I would like to, but need to put the current scope on a deer rifle) but for the moment its fine for foxing out to 250 yards. Vermincinerator
Hi John, Excellent choice on the rifle mate, have a close look at the Sightron S111 6-24x50, they are very good and at around £800 are superb value. You will then have some money left for a range finder and some binos. Get some decent binos, you will be doing a lot of scanning when you are varminting so you dont want to give yourself a headache. There is no need to shell out massive amounts on Swaro Zeiss or Leica, there are very good moderately priced binos from Steiner and Minox that are optically just as good as those mentioned. To extract the very best from your rifle you will need to reload, now thats completely another story Ian.
