scobydog
Hi , looking at a RR 2.5 dse manual, if anybody has had 1 and can give some pointers i would be grateful. Tks in advance
V8 90
I've had 1 - best pointer I can give you is look in the opposite direction. If you get a good 1 "IF" they are said to be very good - however good ones are like rocking horse teeth. I was obsessed with owning 1 & wouldn't listen to any one - god I wish I had done
Catweazle
It's a very heavy car and the engine isn't very powerful. Even the 4.6 petrol is no sprinter. On the plus side, they're built like tanks and are surprisingly good off-road ( for a heavy car ).

scobydog
Ok tks for notes, by the way is a p plate with 45,000 on clock full service history owned by an old dear. Sounds sweet, no smoke and comfy as anything inside still looks like new.Offered to me at 2750.00. Think it is probably worth a punt at that, only to be used as second vehicle and for shooting. Fib new
There are a lot of things that can go wrong at range rover p38's and a lot of things will go wrong usually... But when everything works and you like these things they make a nice motor. That said: I wouldn't touch one with a stick even if I got one for free... Catweazle
You can save yourself a lot of P38 hassle with a couple of fairly inexpensive precautions. Firstly, make sure you have a good battery on it, the electronics get easily confused. Second, dump the standard Dunlop suspension airbags and fit Arnott instead. Thirdly, disconnect the aerial from the remote central locking and use the key instead ( they pick up everything from wireless networks to wireless doorbells and each time they get a signal of some kind the electronics switch on for a while and drain the battery ). Fourth, if the airbags have been leaky for a while, rebuild the air suspension compressor - you can get a service kit for £25 and it's dead easy. If you're going proper off-road then make sure the centre locating part of the alloy wheels are smothered in copperslip as they corrode on solid otherwise. Back brake lines are prone to corrosion, make your own with a kit. If the line from front to back is corroded you'll have fun, it goes above the fuel tank and other parts, the Landrover solution to replacing this brake line is to remove the whole body ! Home mechanics make the replacement in two or more parts and thread it through before joining it together. Lastly, assuming you fit proper tyres ( I have BFG Muds on mine ), remember how heavy it is. I once stopped mine on a woodland track to remove a fallen tree, when I'd finished the car had sunk into the fairly firm ground up to the axles and I had to dig it out. richg
I had a P38. 4.6 HSE for two years, the finest driving 4x4 on the road without a doubt. Sadly at the end of two years i was broke, maintenance and repair costs just to keep it on the road were horrendous. But i wanted one, ive had one, i will never buy another one. PS. I never had a problem getting permission to shoot pigeons when i pulled into the farm yard in a RR. Edited May 12, 2012 by richg

houlsby
As above.. But there's a simple way around the eas. When it goes, and it will, use individual or front/rear fillers and get shot of the pump. Go to the petrol station and fill manually. Takes seconds to adjust the ride. Even works with a bust airbag, Iv filled mine everyday for a year. Only thing I do wish, is that I'd got a derv instead as 4.6 v8 does 13mpg at 90 on the motorway.. And I do 50k miles a year.. So it's no work horse. My van broke down and i was spending £130 a WEEK to go to work locally. That said, it's the best off road car Iv been in. Think of landy, with seats, aircon and comfort. I dragged the outlaws rover sideways out of a 10-15ft deep ditch in the winter... And it got me 240 miles to work in the snow and ice last year.
