Fly Fishing Croatia 2012

We went our annual jolly to the posh end of Croatia last week, so as there a few fly fishermen on here I will post some words and pictures to give an idea of what it is like.

We fish the Gorski Kotar area which is essentially the boarder with Slovenia, in fact we crossed into Slovenia every day as one of the 2 main rivers was unfishable all the time we were there. The weather had been odd, from scorching days, periods of not much rain and then snow the week before we arrived

Anyways we had a mix of sun/cloud/drizzle but nothing serious, being super hard we just fished on through any rain

I have posted similar pictures before, but even so the scenery of the area still needs to be seen to be appreciated, catching is just a bonus to be honest.

So, first day was the Risnjac National Park which looks a bit like this: (nice holiday home location)

Into one during the rain, there was a monster grayling under this bridge and we thought I had hooked it, the look of panic was dealing with that (on a 3 weight rod) and chucking my camera to the guide for him to take the pictures

That fish - and yes I know I need to get catch and release mesh for that net

Next day, and the rest of the trip were spent lower down on the Kupa, or Kulpi as the Slovs call it.

We looked at this stream but as you can see it was coloured and seemed to have very few fish or fly life.

Pity as it had a bar over looking it, one for a future trip..

People never fall in when you want them to, this guy was right to the top of his waders as I struggled to get my camera out in anticipation, but he made it safely across. One of our group duly obliged though when he went in with an automatic (borrowed) buoyancy vest a while later so that made up for it

All in all another great trip, great company and way too much eating and drinking as always but that is just part of the package.

I will be getting the pictures off the others at some point, if anyone is interested I will post them up as well.

Absolutely brilliant, lovely photos, I have got a day fishing booked, first of the year, at the end of June at Kimbridge, starting to wish away the days now. Which flies were doing the damage?

Nymphs during the day, small olive hares ear with a gold bead - nothing else worked as well or was required.

As a bit of entertainment in the evening we had a 'competition' to tie and fly and catch on it, tenner for the first to land one.

I hooked one first and turned to claim my prize when it got off and saw one of the others with one on too - he landed his and the bragging rights to go with it.

The evening hatch didn't happen the way it can do, but for that a sedge is all that is required.

Just come back from 3 days on the Dee - Absolute blank!!

Saturday was ghillies day at Park and a blank there too!!

Mainly due to the weather overall the fishing wasn't as good as it can be, I think I caught about 20 over 3.5 days, so not brilliant.

Believe it or not catches of up to 70 odd in a day can be had when it really kicking off.

But if you aren't there you will never know - and there is always next time!

Easier with pictures, the fly patch of a desperate man

All that is actually needed, well all you needed this year, last year you would look stupid if you didn't have the nymph in orange.

It's a funny old game...

Ridiculously cheap (imo) it was about £400 all up this year, it has been as low as £300 the main variable is the flight costs.

Chuffing hell, I couldn't travel to fish Bewl for a week for that sort of money . :good:

What are their open seasons?

We went to Slovenia a few years ago. It is a fabulous place and well worth a trip. The rivers are so clear it is unbelievable and we saw trout everywhere. While we were there we saw a fly-fishing competition on one of the rivers and the anglers had scouts walking along the river banks spotting trout for them to cast to. The scouts would be on their mobiles telling the anglers who had ear pieces attached to their own mobiles where to cast.

Compared with neighbouring countries like Austria and Italy, Slovenia is remarkably good value except for car hire I recall. That was really expensive.

Mad isn't it? 2 days stockie bashing on the Test can cost more than that.

Not sure about the seasons [i had it all on the day tickets but I have binned them now] it started in May sometime and varies from river to river - we are talking grayling and browns.

As there is a bit of interest I'll stick some of the other pictures up when the become available to me, and no I don't work for the tourist board..
