What dog is right for me?

Recommended Posts

what would be the best dog to have for decoying and putting birds up or hares/rabbits out when rough shooting?

a lab or other retiever will generally sit better in the hide, a spaniel of some description will be the better for flushing birds or rabbits. Either will do both jobs if you train it right. Perhaps you should think how much time sat in the hide and how much walking?

:stupid:

Also take a look at yourself and how much time you spend out and about.

Labs are much more laid back, is that you ?. If you sit on your backside a lot don't get a spaniel IMO they need a lot more mental stimulation.

What about an HPR?? I have a gwp who would do everything you want. You can have a cup of tea before every shot if you want too! All the time in the world!

You need to be active though, as with a spaniel.

Not typical of the type and generally harder to train well. Good choice if you are into the dog side of the sport, not so good if you are asking the type asking OP's question though

Take a look at the parents if possible...try and find a laid back line...don't go in for a feisty trial type of stamp as it may be a tad hot. If it fits the bill any breed...even a x like a Sprocker will do all you ask. I find the patience side of shooting hard to do as I like to be on the go...this reflects through my dogs,so if your a laid back type of shooter your dog will need to be or you wont get on. Labs can find game as well as Spaniels do...likewise spaniels can retrieve as easy as a lab . There are some aspects each breed does better...I would say a lab marks more naturally than a springer at distance, but on walked up a springer will willingly check every bush just in case. Terrain may be a factor to..lots of open space can be handled by any breed, but tight cover you may be best with a Springer/Cocker Good luck

Asked the same question myself a while back and even though i love the spaniel i have settled on a little golden lab,he is very quick to learn and is full of energy, unlike his brother that my daughter got from the same litter  my dog was the biggest and boldest so good for hunting, whereas the other one is totaly laid back and not bothered at all, mine loves to retrieve, hers is not interested.

So when you have chosen your breed, visit the litter often to see which one suits you as they are so different.

Both are sat infront of me,watching a pigeon walk across the lawn

I had a Sprocker (see avatar) the best dog I have ever had, would put a Lab to shame for retrieving, sit in a hide, fetch a Canada, and beat allday long.(not at the same time  )

I've had a Spaniel since, and this one is nowhere near as laid back as Bruce, I feel now might be the time for a Retriever, (I'm a couple of months older  than when I had Bruce, (not saying how many months   )

If you get a good Spaniel they are brilliant,

As has been said work out what you do the most of, a Lab will hunt well, my mate has one that thinks its a Spaniel.

Took the lab on the last pheasant day last season, boring as hell, but for wildfowling she is my girl.

My Spaniel wont sit still while wildfowling, but hunting she is excellent and fantastic to watch, and a joy to take out on the pheasants

so get one of each
