Richard V
Hello everyone. Another question I'm afraid, not sure where to ask this one My "local" club will most likely be the clay ground at Manchester, as it's only a couple of junctions away on the M62. A collegues brother goes there and will probably take me next Wednesday evening (weather permitting). Another collegue who used to be into air rifles has suggested a we both go on a course together (as a couple ) which includes:- Safety and Etiquette How to shoot a moving target Shotgun security How to deal with 'hang fire' Cleaning the shotgun Different shotguns Suitable cartridges Personnal protective equipment Suitable shooting accessories Insurance Young persons and the law How to apply for a shotgun certificate Section 21 of the firearms act 6 Lesson couples package voucher which includes 3 x 1.5 hour shared lessons and 1 year FREE membership (membership is £70 annually) at the club and certificate at end of course - £425. http://www.manchesterclayshooting.com/beginners/beginners.htm I've personally hoped for a couple of lessons before I get my SGC, my collegue just wants to have some lessons and rent a gun from them until he is happy he wants to do it and then he'll put in for his SGC. My question is is it worth the money? Anybody been on this particular course? Cheers Rich
Browning 425 clay hunter
I did the 5 lesson course at worsley. As a complete noob it was ideal for me but even if you've shot a few times and just want to brush up on everything I highly recommend it. I know my FEO was very happy with it because he said although it's not a rule they prefer you to have had at least a couple of lessons and after asking me about how much 'gun time' I've had as soon as I showed him the cert he was aware of the course and asked no further questions on the matter. I guess some on here may think it's a waste of money but for me it was ideal to get some experience before they let me loose with a 12 bore. The coaches are fantastic. I had 3 different ones but that's because I did my 5 lessons in 2 weeks and the same one wasn't always available. There's 2 brothers who do it, winston and louis I think who are both really friendly, crack a few jokes and genuinely want to improve your shooting and the other one (I've forgot his name) I would highly recommend. Also there are 5/6 stands reserved for tuition so no waiting for others to finish. Unless I'm mistaken if your friend hasnt got a SGC he can't rent a gun. I think he needs to have cert or be accompanied by a cert holder( if this is incorrect I'm sure someone will correct it). Once I'd completed the course Andrew in the shop very kindly offerd to pair me up with some regulars that way I could hire a gun ( under their supervision) untill my cert came through. Very kind of him I thought. I think it cost me £350 and I think it's worth every penny. Better to learn the 'right' way from the start than have to try and change you shooting style at a later date IMO. Hope all this waffling helps. Keep us informed if u go for it ATB

Cheers Rich Seems abit steep the price there quoting you, I joined my local club Altcar clay pigeon club near southport took a lesson for £40 the owner taught me a lot for a beginner like me, joined the club for I think it was £40 and tnen I could hire the club gun for £5 ! If your worried about etiquette , gun types ,safety, shooting disciplines etc... Thats why you join a club the members are surely more than willing to indulge in there knowledge of the sport . Rupert
Only you can determine how you value the course. If you are the kind of person the like nice structured learning then it could be the way forward, personally im a learn as you go type so did as others have said, took a 25 shot taster lesson and loved it,then an hour one to one and the rest i picked up an in a small friendly club enviroment helped by members,no way to determine the wheat from the chaff with my way. Keep us informed if u go for it ATB 425 I was just about to type pretty much the same words. The package of 5 lessons not only gave me something to keep me occupied whilst I was waiting for my SGC but also, gave the FEO another tick in a box. When I broke down the costs I thought I ended up with pretty decent value. Once you take out the membership fee (which I'd have paid anyway) it worked out at £55 per lesson. Considering that you get through £10 of shells and, about £18 worth of clays per lesson, £27 per hour for the coach's time and tutoring seemed like a very fair price. Not only that, as per the experience above, when my lessons were over and I still didn't have my SGC, I was paired off with some members who were more than happy to chaparone me. I found it to be a great introduction to the sport and, to the club at large.
cant hit rabbits 123
That seems incredibly steep! I pay £30 for a years membership at my club, before I had my SGC I just borrowed guns from those I was shooting with and I shot with many brands of O/U, a few side by sides, a few semi autos and even a pump action. I was taught everything they are offering to teach in roughly the same time but at roughly 20% of the price. I have never had any real proffessional lessons, although those people I shoot with are very good and thats probably helped. On a good day I can break 80% of the clays thrown so they must have done something right!
Gordon R
I would invest the money with lessons from Beretta - - here on Pigeonwatch. Different league of coaching and far better value for money.
HDAV
Interesting idea BASC charge £5-£10 for a basic course and lessons vary in cost and value.
chrispti
You could learn all of that for a fraction of the cost, with a lesson or 2 with decent coach and a good browse through Pigeon Watch

Different league of coaching and far better value for money. I have to agree with Gordon on this, I am quite sure that the man named "beretta" can teach you much more for your money. Richard V
30 minutes, if you take your time. Fair enough, I've already delt with shotgun security in the other thread and a call to the local FEO for free (used the works phone), and I've applied for my SGC so that's 2 out of the list already  I'll give beretta a PM and see where he is located and prices, etc. Unless I'm mistaken if your friend hasnt got a SGC he can't rent a gun. I think he needs to have cert or be accompanied by a cert holder( if this is incorrect I'm sure someone will correct it). I should have a certificate by then, however I'll probably be renting for a couple of outings myself just to get a general feel of different guns before comitting to a large purchase of a gun. HDAV
If the ground has an 11(6) which it should then it's at the owners/managers descretion to lend to a none cert holder on the premises
