Big Mat
Hi all, I've been doing abit of reading and looking at pictures of the different species ready for the upcoming season. I've got the BASC booklet and have looked at the RSPB website. Are there any other good ones to have a look at? atb mat

Thunderbird
GWA does a wildfowl ID course at Slimbridge. I'm on my iPhone at the mo so I can't see your location though.
kent
The real issue is on the marsh under real fowling conditions you dont even see ducks from drakes a lot of the time. Call, flight pattern and silloutte are what you need. Go with someone who knows and get them to keep a close watch on you is best, if in doubt don't shoot it
anser2
Try this http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-BBC-Video-Guide-Wildfowl/dp/B000MTMBG0/ref=sr_1_1?s=video&ie=UTF8&qid=1342040109&sr=1-1 Shows birds in flight and most in flocks as well as swimming \ standing while pointing out all the main ID points. utectok
British birds iPhone app is brilliant expensive but cheaper than a book and it's got calls too. However for wildfowling you will just need to ID a few species depending on where your shooting.... Ie I have pinks barnacles and a few greys in my bay and mallard teal widgen and a few shelduck. So long as you can ID barnacle and shellduck your gonna be ok. But I suppose other places may have more species and of course if ur not sure don't shoot. happy.plinker
I was going to buy the BASC quarry id book from the BASC site for £4 but the postage to Orkney is £4.99!! a bit steep,it's not that big or heavy surely,I'd sooner buy a small rspb book instead. Why dont you pop into the RSPB office in in Stromness & see what they have in there ! just tell em you want to make sure you dont bag any Greenland White fronts or get your self a telescope & use the RSPB birdie look out huts , nothing to say a wildfowler cant use them to brush up on their quarry identification is there ! well after all its in their interests too isent it !
