Frenchieboy
I have a question for you guys "in the know". My .243 has a satin chrome barrel and I am about to fit a new moderator on it which is also a brushed aluminium/silver colour. I use the rifle for both Deer (in the daytime) and for lamping foxes. I am a bit concerned about the barrel and moderator shining a bit during the daytime sunshine (When we eventually get any) and the reflection/glare off the lamp/moderator at night. I have a spare new roll of the non-stick (Jack Pyke) camo tape which should minimise these potential problems so my question is: If I wrap both the barrel and moderator with this camo tape will the tape on the barrel effect the harmonics/accuracy of the barrel in the same way as if the barrel was not properly free floating so to speak? (The barrel on my rifle is currently free floating, as it should be and the rifle is more accurate than I could ever shoot it - I can (More often than not) hit a hens egg at 200 yards with it) If the answer is "yes" it will effect the harmonics/accuracy then what would members who might have experienced this sort of problem suggest as an alternative please? yankeedoodlepigeon
I would not bother putting anything on it as I don't think the problem will be as bad as you think it is.
jamiedenny
I always try to avoid wrapping it tightly around the barrel and stock. A loose wrap around both works just fine, or the barrel and mod only up to the stock.
Deiseboy
you could also just wrap it until it reaches the barrel. I have a stainless barrel and I dont think it matters too much.
steve_b_wales
I once used thin crepe bandage that had been soaked in strong tea, to stain it. I wrapped it over the barrels of a shotgun, and just taped the ends up. It worked a treat.
barrelsniffer
Funny you mention this i have tape on my mods and never had any changes on any rifles..then 2 weeks ago while home i changed tape on my 17rem mod and my rifle shot a inch high at 100y so had come down 4 clicks..yet the tape i had on first was a lighter made tape...so may be best to check zero after applying any tape. Alycidon
Dont bother, they are more worried about you, shape, scent, movement than a matt silver barrel. If the buisness end is pointed at bambi then there is not a lot for them to see. When walking its on a sling over your shoulder, again not a lot for a deer to see. £ of my rifle barrels are mat stainless, never has any issues at all. kent
you can buy easily removable paints as used by British forces. try sporting services The AI dealer. Or just don't wrap around the barrel just over the top in a strip lengthwise, it also uses less tape all sorts of things can effect zero, sometimes it does on one and yet not on another (removing then re-fitting mods does on a few) dont ask why it just does sometimes, you need to test to find out. You never know until you try removing the free float and using tape to effect a pressure bed might even improve some guns (though most will turn bad)
coyotemaster
I have wrapped quite a few Pete and find exactly the same as the others have, it will change some impacts and not effect on others. I am very partial to paints, but it's not for everyone. If you aren't having any problems with game spooking off, I might be inclined to let sleeping dogs lie. Frenchieboy
Thanks for all of the fedback guys! I will be picking up the moderator today (I'm leaving home at about 8:00 this morning to go out to the other side of York for it) and will be fitting and zeroing it tomorrow (Weather permitting) I'll see how things go without covering the mod first and then try it with the lamp fitted. I have to admit that what a lot of you have said about the sunshine reflecting from the barrel and mod makes sense as (Hopefully) all that any "quarry" is likely to see is the front end cap of the mod and the front lens of the scope, so my only real worry should be any reflection or glare from the lamp when fitted so I might, and only if need be, just wrap the mod with the camo tape. p.s. It's good to hear from you again Timothy, how are things going mate? Edited July 22, 2012 by Frenchieboy
