thousands of pigeons

Hi all!

Friday

I had a phone call from one of my farmers on friday afternoon asking if I was about as there were thousands of pigeons hitting a newly cut field of rape.

I knew from previous experience that when he sees birds he sees what we see and not what farmers usually see ( see 20 and "there's hundreds" see a hundred and there's thousands). We shot 618 pigeons one day last year on the same farm.

I had other things to do but could not miss out on the request. 30 minutes later i'm on my way. I drive up through the wood and out onto the field and WOW!!!!!.,no exaggerating; there was at least 5-6,000 pigeons spread right across one end of the field to the other.

I sat looking for flight lines and there were so many I decided to set up right in the middle of the field in a pit.

I put out a dozen decoys , flapper and magnet and had been there about an hour and shot 41 pigeons. Heaven sprang to mind and then the farmer rang me and asked could I pack up shooting for a bit as he was just finishing off another field and it was full of rabbits he wanted sorting. " pack up?" i said, you gotta be joking. Wounded wasn't the word. I turned off the magnet and flapper and drove down to the field in question and stood between the combine and hedgerow waiting for the rabbits to bolt. After about an hour I had shot 12 and only 1 got away, too far up the field.

He thanked me profusely and I then went back to my hide but by then it was late and I had to pack up.

Saturday

Unfortunately, my mate had promised one of his farmers to go early and have a go at some blackies as I wanted to return to the farm from the day before. We arrived early and split into 2 hides and shot steadily until mid-day. The boys did very well and shot 64 and we shot 27.

I couldn't wait to pick up and head to the farm for the pigeons. Unfortunately , we were shooting near stratford and there was some bloody Earth festival on nearby and the roads were gridlocked. It took 2 hours to travel 7 miles and we finally arrived at the farm only to see a handful flitting about. We set up 2 hides again and me and the boy shot 31 and alan had 49 by the pit.

Most of the birds were flighting over the top of us to another field the farmer was combining.

80 x pigeons

91 x blackies

Sunday

We went for driveabouts to check some other farms first to see what had been cut but the only one with any amount of birds on were being shot by 2 others. we watched for a while and they were getting them decoying in lovely. best of luck to them.On the blackie farm we spent a couple of hours and only managed 36; So, decision made to go to the 2 fields that were cut on saturday night.

There were a few hundred about and again we split up. the boys set up under a line of trees on a flight-line and we set up on the hill. I hadn't even finished up the hide and the boys were banging away from the off. It was manic sport all day long, but the boys were shooting 3 times more than us. They eventually ran out of shells and after a few phone calls we managed to get another 100 for them. We shot till 7pm and the head count was the boys 203 pigeons and 1 jackdaw. We had shot 89.

329 birds for the day
