Yeah! That'll learn him!

I've been watching carefully for a couple of weeks now as a hole started to appear in the undergrowth at the edge of my garden. Then the other day I was out chatting on the phone and a bloody rat ran up the little trail and was gone before I could blink! I went out with the hushpower until it got dark but it didn't reappear. I came up with a plan...

I put a roofing slate on the ground between the hole and the wood pile where I suspected the rat to be living. Then for a couple of days I've been spreading watered down chicken paste on it. Every morning the paste had gone.

I continued the trend this evening but added the dull light from my small maglite to the area. Then I sat in the office upstairs with the .22lr poking out of the window. After several mad dashes (I suspect the light was spooking him) the rat decided it would be safe to stop for a munch... WRONG! Pop... Splat... One dead rat! I think there are more so we will see what story the paste tells in the morning. For now there's one rat with a hole in him - this place is turning into a mini sporting estate lately as I've had two squirrels this week too. One in the BMI bodygrip trap and the other shot off of the bird table with the .410 (sorry dad, I broke your bird feeder again!).

I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow now!
