whitey10765666
Any one here reload their own cartridges, is it feasible, or not worth the bother.
Lord Geordie
Just started. Cheaper to reload clay carts, not priced game components yet?
huffhuff
Yes, lots of people do. Do a search as its been discussed a lot, or have a flick through the dedicated reloading forum here; http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/forum/26-bullets-cartridges-and-reloading/

Guest cookoff013
I'm going to clay and game next week to buy my set up. Looking forward to lots of reading and being able to make my own loads. i`d just like to point out, that a sizemaster is absolutely brilliant. the jr is ok, i did alot of development loads with my jr, it was just the cheapest mec on the market. it is the components that are more important, not the reloading technique or machine. any mec is going to be well worth it. the components i suggest you buy, are cx2000 primers, vectan AS, 3-4mm powder card, 20mm fibre, and some lead. those components can cover 24g loads, 28g, 30g and 32, as well as 32g subsonics. all with those components (12gauge 70mm) i bought the 7/8oz skeet special bar to drop 24g of shot. (23.5grams of #6). so is spot on. the 7/8oz normal lead bar drops 25-26grams (it was 2nd hand so could have been drilled.) if you are after specialised 36g + then a different powder and wad are used. need any help? we are just here. if you are relaoding steel, just put up a post and we can help you with the best loads. as i`ve always said, just because a load is published, doesnt mean its any good. super sharp shooter
Thanks for all the info buddy. The mec press that I'm going to buy is the steel size master with the multi charge bar. I'm going to be loading 3.5" steel no3 to start with so could you recommend me a powder/primer and wad please.
Guest cookoff013
the steel master is the 3.5" loader for steel shot, it is kitted out for loading steel shot. ie bigger openings in the bottle and bigger drop tube. ok, if you are shooting geese, then allaint steel probly is your best bet. i would look around for some recipes and wads. but BB minimum for geese. super sharp shooter
That looks like a tasty recipe. I spoke to Steve when I phoned them last week and he seemed to know what he was talking about
Guest cookoff013
yeah, maybe they have better recipes, i know they have alot. i`d not compromise on the shot size. even 2s at 1400fps is going to be better than the 32g #4 domestic stuff here. the cases you`d be using would be cheddite 3.5" or the fiocchi 3.5". i would stick to loading up one recipe and loading either 2s or BBs. duck and goose respectively. if you are exclusively going for goose then load for that, as there are a few adequate duck loads already available. ChrisAsh
If you Google "shotshell calculator" and just use £ instead of $ you can work out how much it will cost to make your own cartridges, probably just break even on 12g make most on either 410 or 28 gauge Dont forget you need to travel to the nearest supplier for Primers and Powder, biggest saving is if you make your own shot by getting cheap lead, old car wheel weights, lead pipe from Victorian houses etc
Guest cookoff013
reloading 3.5" steel makes sense. £540. per 1000 shells, thats 54p a shell. he can load for 40p at least.
super sharp shooter
40p a load is good I just paid £61 per 100 in 3.5"
Guest cookoff013
40p a load is good I just paid £61 per 100 in 3.5" its these funny loads where the cost of the reloader could be recouped in the first 1000 shells. (or therabouts with some number fudging) a shop just over the border sells 32g game loads for £400 /k. that is daylight robbery. but i just shop elswhere or reload. and these RFDs seriously tell us there is no money in shells. same cartridge "justcarts" £250/k crazy prices
motty
Thanks for all the info buddy. The mec press that I'm going to buy is the steel size master with the multi charge bar. I'm going to be loading 3.5" steel no3 to start with so could you recommend me a powder/primer and wad please. A couple of decent recipes here - Fed 3 1/2" plastic base Win 209 39 grains steel powder Sam 1 3 1/2" wad 1 1/2oz steel- 1450fps - 11200 psi Or 3 1/2" Rem (yellow base) win 209 35gn steel Sam1 3 1/2" wad 1 1/2oz steel 1395fps 11800psi I used the remington loads at the start of last season on Canadas. They did the job well. I've just bought a load of the Federals and i'm loading with steel and hevi shot.Should be good loads also.
