Robl
So what im getting at is,why keep a dog as a pet. I think ultimately the answer to that comes down to one simple reason. “Because they want to.” Some people like dogs as companions. Some like cats. I have a few friends who have house rabbits as pets. I once knew a girl in Panama with a pet Sloth, rescued after a car accident killed the mother. Different people have different wants in life and we’re all different. You may not understand it, and it’s possible you’ll never quite comprehend their reasoning, and that’s fine. But, in such situations I tend to just step back, shrug, and carry on with my life and let them get on with theirs. It’s fine to discuss these things, but I find it’s best not to Judge or criticise. shaun4860
When my dogs are not up to scratch they will be retired not put down, and replaced by a new one. People like me can see the need for a dog,not just have one because they want one,ie pet. To where? If you can't find someone to take him/her on then it will be destroyed in your world because you shut down all the homes and destroyed the dogs your view on life I find sad, someone who is a dog lover can't have one in your world because its not a working dog? shaun4860
all that I can say is it feels good to think that I have taken my little Dog from the cage that he was in and given him a good home for the rest of his life.
WGD
There are many sides to this thread and I have not read and interrogated every post, but whilst Albert888's post may have been poorly worded or hasty I can agree with the sentiment, purely because if rescues did not exist and euthanasia was the only option people may think twice about irresponsible breeding and selling of puppies, getting a dog on a whim, or giving up on a perfectly good dog because the novelty has worn off. Rescue centres give an easy out to too many people, and too many dog owners pop out litters left right and centre to make a few quid, not really worried whether their pups are going to someone who understands the needs of the breed, as long as they get a handful of notes. That said, rescues do exist and although I have not had a dog from a rescue centre I would consider homing the right type of dog (something with working potential that was being wasted or not allowed to fulfil its potential) but not until I had sufficient time to commit to the dog and not whilst I have young children. I know where my pups have been and how they have been socialised and treated, I can't say that for any dog I would get from a rescue. Im not argueing about it just my view on the matter. If you and others love dogs as pets then thats great. It all so feels good that i have taken my dogs from bad homes and given them the life they deserve. I wouldn't do that fella, you are as entitled to your opinion as the next man. Maybe think on a little bit about how you word things though. I can see where you're coming from even if I don't agree with it and it's produced some interesting posts which is surely what forums are all about. Oh, just make sure you put your fire proof, extra thick skin on if you're feeling controversial!

FalconFN
We tried for ages to get a rescue dog but it was next to impossible. Despite the rescue centre near us saying that they have too many dogs to rehome the waiting list was apparently so long it would take us 6 months of weekly visits to get near the top! After weeks of trips to the centre and a home visit (where they suggested that our 5 ft fence wasn't high enough) they said that because we had a 5 year old it may be difficult. We eventually found a young dog at another centre and had a meeting but by the time all the hurdles were jumped and the second home visit was arranged it had been rehomed by another family. I understand that they want the dogs to go to the right homes but if we were't ideal with a big garden, rural location surrounded by fields, someone at home nearly all of the time and the time and energy to give to a rescue dog, then who is? In the end we paid 3 times what the centre wanted and got a cocker from a reputable breeder.

Oh, just make sure you put your fire proof, extra thick skin on if you're feeling controversial! Have to agree with this. Forums are all about discussions, and sometimes the tough topics make the best discussions. Also, any discussion needs some someone to argue both sides of the argument to get a balanced debate. It’s all good. But, sometimes we can all type in a way that can be misread. Nuance and tone is easy to miss in types text, and quotes can cause context to be lost.
