steve0146
I have tried various loads. Gave up on 2 3/4 steel as hopeless in my opinion. For the foreshore anyway. Probably fine if decoying or on a flight pond, but I dont do much of it. Nearly everything was a runner. Bismuth was ok but expensive. So far, after switching to 3 inch 36g 1 steel, I have had 12 geese, all stone dead. One or two were big canada's and around 40yds. I have tried other loads in 3 inch but have come back to these. However, what works for me in my gun and choke, might not work for someone else. I think you just have to experiment on the pattern plate and stick to a good load once you have found it. simon6ppc
thanks for that steve.may be what we use is good enough up to the 45 yard mark ,i know the heavey shot is top stuff.but so is the price.
Rimfireboy
Didn't rate the express 32grm 5's hunting steel.
anser2
I mainly use 3 inch BB or 3.5 inch BBB steel , but only with a full after choke. If they are close I have shot a number of greylag with Gamebore Mamoths 36gr no 3s, but only if in the 30 yard range and no further. The shells are good enough to knock the geese down , but though completly imobile they are usualy not dead and need a quick neck break. All shot while expecting duck. What is important to maintain a high kill average is to use a steel proof after choke set at full ( .700) when using BB or BBB. I find 3.5 inch Winchester no 1 a good high mallard shell , but not man enough for a 45 yard goose , but the BBB are a very different story. Rimfireboy , I would not use steel no 5 on ducks let alone geese. For me personaly BB ( US size which is larger than UK size ) is the smalest shot size I would consider in steel for a 45 yard shot. Were these the Gamebore Mammoth 36g No1? I use to use them but i use home loads now. Only put 32g no1 in there but they fly at 1550ft/sec. I tested them and they still put over 55 hits in thirty inch circle at 50y. I used them on Canada's last year and counted for nearly 100! very good stopping power at good ranges. Anth6568
Agreed, had many geese from that ammunition and they are cheap!! In my browning I found that a quarter choke was best. I use Trulock extended chokes now with my home loads. Good combo!! Go with what you feel confident with and that seems to work.
Yoggy
Remington Sportsman or Nitro steel in sizes,2,1,or BB in 3in work for me. All shot through 1/4 choke. I`ll drop down to a 4 if I`m decoying.

steve0146
half choke for me. Tried the full set that came with the gun and an after market choke but ended up sticking to the 1/2. Once you find the right cartridge and choke combo that works for you and you have confidence in it, just stick with it. The use of a pattern plate will really help. I bought some Bornaghi steel 1's for a trip to Norfolk a couple of years ago. Myself and a mate shot a handful of teal, a mallard and a goose. None were picked. All either seemed to regain strength again and took off or dived on the water and never found. (we had dog before anyone asks). I got back and patterned the shells. At 30yds on a 30yd circle, the shells put 7 shot on the paper! Compared to my mates homeload of no 2 steel at 40 yds puts 134 shot on the paper in a decent pattern. ( paper is 30in square )

Yoggy
hiya pal, how come you all like quarter choke and not half. does it throw a better pattern with steel or sumet Hi mate, At this present time I`m shooting Inland washes and not the coast. 90% of the birds I shoot are no higher than 30 yards max and are mostly shot over decoys. Using 1/4 choke is more than enough for my needs. I used 1/2 choke for part of last season and found this was a little overkill for me personally. I dropped down to 1/4 and found this was much better. At the moment I`m using a Winchester X3 with 1/4 choke and with my Remington cartridges I find this to be a perfect set-up. RossEM
Been using Remington Nitro Steel BB on greylags (10 bore, half choke), couldn't be happier with them except for the price!
