Country_est
Hi, My Lab (6 1/2 yrs) has just had emergency surgery to have his dew claws removed. On sunday night while out for a walk with a bit of pre seaon training thrown in he came limping back with the dummy. Upon walking him home and examining him in the light I noticed that the dew claw on the left leg was sticking out a 90degrees to the leg. Quick trip to the vets first thing on Monday morning resulted in him having to be anesthetized to fix the problem, and as this is the 2nd time in less that a year it was deceided to remove it, and whilst out may as well do both. So I have a thug of a black lab looking sorry for himself in pink socks, but hopefully in 10 days all will be well again. The question I have is how many of you have your dogs dew claws done, and whether it is covered as part of the docking laws brought in recently. The reason I ask this is that this is my first dog that ever had dew claws, my other 2 were docked before I got them at 8 weeks. Cheers Trev

Cheers Trev Trev', don't quote me but I don't think the dew claws form part of the new laws.......I have 3 Springers of which two were 'dew clawed'. The other we had awful trouble with as my father attempted to cut them once and failed! she was very skittish about anyone going near her feet/claws afterward. We had to wrap her in a quilt and attempt it every few months as they'd grow virtually into the pad. (what a carry on that was). Ended up having them removed, but she 'removed' the bandages herself and tugged/licked at the wounds/stiches before we noticed and an infection set in....be careful yours doesn't do this, or another trip to the vets. My old mum has recently bought a Springer pup and he was dew clawed, I think you'll find most of the decent breeders will have carried this out........he has his tail still!, and I just can't get used to a Springer with a tail. Country_est
Cheers for that Duncan, I defo think the springers with tails take some getting used to. But glad to here that some breeders are still taking the dew claws of when the pups are still "very" young as to cause minimum pain and save a lot of probs later. Don't look best pleased does he , probably preferred blue!. I was under the impression you were referring to the rear claws, seems this rabble still have thier front ones after all. Just checked and they all wondered what the hell I was up to......
lurcherboy
Much more common among Lurchers CE. There are arguements for and against. For example some believe that the cur will be able to turn better using the dewclaw, I think this is ***** but each unto their own. I have two and one has removed the other not, neither have suffered any damage when being 'excercised' and I think you were just unlucky mate Hope the fella makes a speedy recovery without any complications LB
Country_est
Hope the fella makes a speedy recovery without any complications LB Yeah cheers for that, hope so too. Mate's spiringer is off colour too so we have had to cancel the opening trip to the foreshore. Vet recons he should be ok in a couple of weeks, so hopefully ready for the start of the pheasants, and the real cold weather wildfowling. Other than that he's enjoying his extended stay in the house so we can watch him on a night so he doesnt chew the bandages. Cheers Trev

new to the flock
Have always docked any puppys dew claws within 48 hours. I do however have a couple of dogs that I have aquired that still have them. Most will get through life with few or no problems with them but once torn have them taken off. The dew claw has no real purpoe now adays. It is a left over from when dogs had a fifth toe. To stop him licking get out to your pet supply and get some bitter apple to spray on. Most wont touch the stuff. Kirky I believe that it is still legal to to dock working dog tails in the UK. Cheers, NTTF

Country_est
Kirky, Yes it is still leagal to dog "working" dogs, but you have to prove your pupy will be one.? Also there are restrictions such as that you cannot show your dog in a show where the public pay to watch if the dog is docked. Dont ask me I didn't make the laws I just opposed them. Cheers Trevf. lurcherboy
As far as I know Kirky the new legistation stated that the dogs would have to be done within a few days of birth and the owner would have to prove they were workers. There was also a suggestion that SGC or FAC holders would need to show their certificates. I am prepared to be shot down over this one though LB

I just used to have my jrt 's docked but i have now decided to dew claw at the same time. I also get a certificate from the vet saves any arguing fines ect. My vet will dock between 2and 5 days no sooner or after. Down sidw is it costs me £30 a pup for docking and dew claws

Country_est
Had him back to the Vets today to have the bandages off. Wouldn't leave them alone in the vets let alone when he was home so it was time for the buck with a hole. If he looked UNCHUFFED before now take a look
lurcherboy
Think yourself lucky you don't keep Lurchers CE. Mine have their own lampshades now LB
al4x
We've got 2 Jack Russels both were docked at a few hours old by a family member. They never knew a thing, They came from two separate litters one which had the dew claws off at the same time and one that didn't. One problem with the one that didn't is the bloody thing tries to climb up peoples legs using them Personally mine work and I'd probably stop having Jack russels if I had to have one with tails as they do grow ridiculously long for something that will work in brambles all day long
