Its been poor

Seems that other parts of the country are showing plenty of duck..but here in North Wales(Caernarfon) its been dreadful recently.Last night was my 6th flight in a row without a shot,or even seeing duck in numbers.

The Widgeon that arrived in good numbers late September are virtually gone, and whilst other seasons have seen good numbers of pintail they also have gone.Mallard gone after the first week. And never get Teal here.

I have tried everything, morning flights which always the best bet have been very poor, whilst evenings duck have been non existant.

The only notable exception has been a big influx of Brent geese this season, and one wonders if this can be the cause of the Widgeon leaving? I know that they can decimate areas of zostra which in turn affects the widgeon population.

God knows? climate wise its not been the best with a huge amount of rain and flooding, very few windy days and quite mild.Cant be down to over shooting as we are a small club with around 40 members many of whom you never see.

Has anybody else experienced a decline this season in other parts?

Cheers

Tony

The amount of water everywhere will mean that the ducks are spread out over larger areas. Once the flooding subsides I suspect you will start to see better concentrations of birds.

Agreed, there are just way too many inland splashes, fields etc Until we start geting some cold weather to freeze some areas up there are just too many places for the duck to be.

Whent out on thursday only so a few teal and mallard on the way out and heard one widgen whistling towards the main chanel that was sat amongst a load of canadas. I have a habbit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just round the coast from you, good luck and keep at it,it will come good in the end.

Off topic i know but after when reading your post it takes me back to the early seventies, I used to travel down to Caernarvon every Saturday during the season to meet up with local mates to go and follow the Snowdon Valley Foxhounds who were based in Bangor - we used to have some good day's out and plenty of leg-pulling etc.

I lost touch over the years, and recently heard a number of the local characters had now sadly passed away.
