Red Dot recepie help

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

could somebody please help me with a shotshell load i have in the charge table for my lee load all.

cheddite factory primed case 12 Gauge 70mm

18.9 Grains Red Dot powder ( bushing .163)

28 Grams of N07 Shot

Claybuster CB1100-12 Wad

The recepie is exactly the same as one that appeared on the Alliant powders site with the exeption of the wads which were Remington RXP 12 , unfortunatley i cant seem to source these so will have to use Claybusters.

Will this load be safe to construct with the claybuster wad instead of the Remington wads?

for the record they look very similar wads but i would like to check first.

cheers

I might have been able to get hold of some RXP 12 wads from the U.K importer but we shall see, i read on an American site that the accuracy of the powder measure is far more important than the actual wad used, as long as its not too short for the hull which, according to the site, can have the shot height column raised with the column adjusters.

Apparantly most 28 Gram 2/34 Red Dot loads are safe with any " suitable" wads as long as i do not exceed 20 grains of powder, im assuming suitable loads will translate as plastic wads and i certanly do not intenend to put over 20 grains of powder in my homeloads, however im again taking this advice with a pinch of salt as i could just be speculative.

Researching my Lee Load All chart informs me that with my current recepie my 18.9 grains of Red dot ( Bushing 163 ) should be putting out 1200 FPS , i may drop the bushing down to 155 which will give me 18 grains of powder and drop the FPS to 1145.

Lee bushings generally throw 5 to 10% less than the stated grains....... in my humble experience!

I tend to use powder dippers for all my clay and game loads which are far more accurate - only using the lee for throwing the lead and then crimping

Normally then finish of with a rto which gives a superb looking factory finish

Same here....even when I use the MEC range.

yep,

also note that at one point there were 2 bushing drop charts for mecs. one from hodgdon, thats about 1 grain light per drop, and mec drop chart that is one bushing different. ie bushing 23 drops the weight of bushing 22.

always use a scale.

i just couldnt really say if any of those wads were any good.

you may in the future, check out gualandi wads. they are exellent. and they are available in this country.

the other thing i`m mildly confused on, why the red dot? vectan AS is just as good.

The claybuster wads are fine, I have shot them for years and no problems(outside the litter) I know cheddite hulls produce less pressure/velocity than my AA tapered hulls but I find that 17 grains RD gives me a very pleasant shooting game load. Before I discovered 21 gram loads I shot 1 oz for quite a while.

You may find there are powders out there that have slower burn rates that kick a bit less than RedDot-----700X/ Green Dot etc.
