Shoot-rhino
I have just been granted my first firearms certificate for a .223 and .308 I have been reading lots of threads on PW where people talk about there certificate being open etc. Where do I stand! I'll only be shooting foxes around the lambing shed, so my ground will be the only place I shall be shooting but just wondered where I stand! In the conditions it states- The firearm(s) and ammunition shall be used for the lawful shooting of vermin, ground game, fox, deer and for zeroing on suitable land over which the certificate holder has authority to shoot. Cheers

VikingRebel
Some forces i think have a policy of granting open tickets from the start. I know this is the case in North Yorkshire.
Kes
Maybe Dumfries police should have a Christmas Party with Cheshire Police and tell them how happy the 'customers' are in their area
alexander1948
this will be open i was granted the same for 222 and 22 and p.c.p.airrifle by d and g con
bedwards1966
You can shoot anywhere you have permission. Your lucky, North Yorkshire is the only force I was aware of which issued open certificates on the first grant.
Shoot-rhino
Was surprised to find out it was open! This mean for example if a neighbouring farmer was having a problem with foxes around lambing time I could legally dispatch of a few foxes without having to inform the police

Livefast123
Thats 2 decent centrefires you have there, go easy with them and stay safe especially at close range around the lambing shed...... I apparently have to wait 5 years to open mine with Avon and Somerset Edited December 18, 2012 by Livefast123
bongo321
Nothing personal glad you got it open on first application and centre fire rifles thrown in , But that is so unfair on nearly everyone else that has to wait 5 yrs untill renewal to get it opened , and even less chance of getting centre fire on first application for hunting , maybe a little easier for range/target use that i dont know . You would not get a sniff at that in Cheshire you have to wait that long for a spud gun and then only with mentor , But it is wrong and so frustrating for people and it should be the guidelines followed equally in all areas , not random hit and miss , ps i have an open certificate . Doggone
I think they are all open in Scotland. Andy
Gibbybox
Do you have any proof of that Doggone? Reason I ask is that my dad has an open certificate by the looks of it and I'm in the process of applying for mine, it would be fantastic to be granted an open one straight away! Contrary to common belief, it's not difficult to get a center-fire on a first application. Show your good reason, show your safe (been shown how to use one safely) and they cannot say no. If the FEO or FLD says you can't have one, tell them to put the refusal in writing so you can take it to appeal, at which point they change their mind - your legally entitled to one if you have good reason. Getting an open certificate is very nice, I do feel sorry for those who get closed ones. It serves no purpose and does not improve safety - there is no such thing as 'safe' land, every shot has to be considered carefully whatever the land is. Shoot-rhino
Yeah I do agree it should be the same where ever you are, that just doesn't seem fair!

Gibbybox
Tremendous, I have my interview tomorrow so might ask the officer that comes out. Fingers crossed!

Gibbybox
In the heat of the moment I forgot to ask, he was really helpful with everything else though. I'll wait and see what is written on my certificate when it lands on the doorstep... soon hopefully!
grimey121uk
Well it came yesterday, the supervision bit doesn't really concern me as it appears to say that I can zero my scope without being supervised so at least I can get out an use my new rifle. Does anything else other than the supervision seem normal?
al4x
Scotland has the type of landscape where land surveys are very hard work and it is also far less inhabited than the rest of the UK so that is why they issue open certificates from the start. bedwards1966
That's not too bad actually - the person accompanying you doesn't even need to be a certificate holder!
