shotgun refurb / repair

I have an AYA no.3 sxs magnum with beavertail forestock that I'd like to sort out - it was my first shotgun so I'd rather not scrap it altogether.

What happened, in a nutshell, was I thought I'd cleaned it before putting it away and I hadn't (I bought a new gun at the same time).

I got it out 6 months later and, to my horror, the bores were in a right state. I tried to hone them carefully and got nowhere so, after speaking to someone far more knowledgeable than I am, I came to the conclusion that I'd fix it when I could afford to.

The rear stock has a crack in it too but that's almost a separate issue

So, what can be done?

I've heard talk of barrel liners which sounds good but I hear it's not cheap?

about the only other thing I can think of is to buy another and make the best gun I can out of the two (will need a gunsmith for that, I expect) anyone know how I'd go about registering it as just the one gun and surrendering what's left?

Personally, I think the latter's the better option and probably cheaper but I don't know about the legalities or how much work would be involved - I believe it was a mass produced gun so probably not a lot but I hope some of you guys can help me out a bit?

Thanks chaps, The gun shop I use gave me a little basic help - he's pretty clued up and the gist was it's probably better not to use if the pitting won't hone out.

So, yeah I'll take it to a gunsmith but I'm pretty sure it's a new barrel or a repair of some sort. Yeah, Somerset is a little bit out of the way but thanks for the suggestion.

I wouldnt have thought that in 6 months the pitting could be so severe that it couldnt be lapped out by a decent gunsmith and still stay within the proof limits. Forget about having it lined by the likes of Nigel Teague, the cost would unfortunately far outweigh the cost of another No 3 Magnum. Have a word with Elderkins of Spalding. This sort of work is bread and butter to them & wont set you back a small fortune.

Go take it too a good smith and get some advice I would have the bores measured and if necassary reproved. There are options but none cheap a replacement set of barrels may be cheaper.

I recommend UK gun repairs in Somerset but may be too far from you.

Another vote for UK gun repairs there work is second to none and they are reasonably priced as well
