hi all have been given permission to shoot some land near me,

i got it for rabbits and pigeon but it has 2 lakes on it about 1 acre each with a strip of land about 20 yards wide separating them and they are full of ducks,

i have no idea where to start so if you could give me any tips on best times, do you decoy like pigeon shooting etc

any help would be good

thanks colin

Get ther an hour before dark, sit on edge of water with some nontox carts and see what comes your way. Recon is key, you will soon spot any flightlines then you can get under them

It may be that they are just using it during the day in which case you will want to b ther just before first light

Double check you have permission to shoot the ducks aswel if you only got the land for pests.

yes will do that when i spoke to him he said i can shoot anything other than the deer and game as they have shoots

the lakes did have a fishing club that use to hold match's on them but he said they gave them up a few years back and they not been fished since

may have to take a carp or pike rod along with me in the hide lol,

do you put hide up at the waters edge or away from lake to get them as they come in??

Colin

In England and Wales you must use non-toxic shot to shoot wildfowl (ducks and geese) no matter where you are.

thanks mate will get some of them then to be safe don't want to be breaking any rule's :good:

the game dealer who supplies our shop told me you don't need them inland only on the foreshore

hello fella. you dont know how lucky you are. is there any natural habitat ie bushes /reeds etc to hide in . because if you go putting up a hide on the bank you will find you will spook the duck . dont forget they will not be used to seeing a strange object . if you are lucky to shoot a few shoot about once every two weeks . and spread some barley in the margines on a regular basis and you wont go far wrong . good luck fella hope this helps.

thanks mate there is plenty of natural cover between the 2 lakes they are old gravel lakes they also have a small river tributary that runs along side the 2 lakes there are about a dozen lakes in a 1 mile radios 2 on my permission,

they have both got plenty of weed beds

when i 1st went for a look there was about 100 birds on the lake today i saw about 20-30 on it when i took the dog for a walk at about midday would a floating decoy and caller be worth trying,

would they feed on damaged ones in the field as that would make a flight line between field and lake??

colin

They may prefer the damaged ones as they have started to rot off. They like them mushy and rotting. Watch the pond and see where the duck come from and what times they come. Dont just go and hope to shoot something, put the work in and you will reap the rewards.
