100milesaway
Had a new thing happen over the last couple of days The electric power point keep tripping out ( only on the plug socket circuit), When i go into the garage to reset the switch it trips out again within seconds, it has stayed on for the last 12 hours but i am abit reluctant to leave the buiding in case something catches on fire. It's obvious that somethings happening but its the old old story if something goes wrong it always happens during holiday times. Any pointers or advise would be helpful, i don't know my leccie well enough to drag him out at Xmas.from Auntie.
bullet1747
Is it the same thing that is plugged in to the socket, is it the breaker or RCD that trips
Tomm
Hi. I would start first by unplugging everything on that supply then reset the overload. If it trips again then it's a wiring fault if not the. Start to plug items back in, if it trips then its likely to be the appliance. Let us know what happens Tom
Bigstep
Might be something you have plugged in that has a fault on it, have you got any Christmas lights plugged in outside as with all this rain might have got water in them. 99% of the faults I get called out to are faulty appliances so start by unplugging items out of the sockets that are effected and see if it still trips out. paul1966
we had something similar, turned out to be the mains filter on the dishwasher shorting intermittently
100milesaway
As i'm not leccie minded, i'm not too sure what is tripping out but it affects all the plug sockets in the house when it happens. Sir has just gone to the garage and tells me it's says on the switch which keeps tripping RCCB it is green. There is a test switch above it which says we should test it once a month. We have lived here for 7 years and never even knew it was there. There are another 8 switches that as far as we can tell don't trigger and all the lights always stay on just the sockets that go out., including stuff like the fridge ,microwave computer etc etc. I'm scared of switching anything off at the moment as everything is working. from Auntie. bullet1747
The rccb is in easy terms the rcd ,as the first couple of post have said un plug ever thing on the socket circuit, chances are it's a appliance 99% of call outs are this , it's a neutral eath fault ,have you any lamps plugged in are the light bulbs all working ,it could be a number of things
blister
i had the same prob un pluged everthing put it all back one at a time found out when i pluged the kettle back in it triped the circuit wire had come losse in the plug
HDAV
all you can do is unplug everything and then go round one appliance at a time until it trips...if all is well its intermittent and you may have to turn on devices one at a time. 100milesaway
As i have about 30 sockets all with plugs perminantly plugged in some in use some not, would it have to have been something like the fridge freezer that was in use on one of the trip outs at 4-30 in the morning or could it trip out just by being plugged in and not in use.All the light bulbs are working the only outside lights are exterior lights all around the house, and they all seem to be ok.From Auntie. 100milesaway
Have just had a walk around the outside of the house and low and behold 2 of the outiside lights are not working and as soon as the other 2 came on they went out in seconds and so did all the plug sockets inside. So i hope i'm right in assuming that the problem is outside and my house isn't going to burn down. I will ring my leccie after new year Thanks alot lads ,from Auntie. PWD
Could be something that comes on intermittently that's causing the bother...like says fridge which boots up when it needs to chill. There will be a common denominator that's causing it...the xmas lights as mentions are a good one, especially if on a plug in timer.

Sounds as it's the lights ,are they on the socket circuit via a fuse spur No it won't burn down
proud dad
As said above, it could be any appliance but I would look towards any appliance with an element (kettle, washer, dishwasher, oven etc).

Sounds like your exterior lights are run off the socket ring then....... are they PIR lights?
100milesaway
We don't know what circuit the outside lights are on as all the wiring they are on is all up in the loft. The house has had a real battering this week with all the high winds and incessent rain so i'm pretty confident that that is where the problem lies.I have switched the exterior lighting off on the main switch in the garage so hopefully it won't trip out again. from Auntie. Sounds like your exterior lights are run off the socket ring then....... are they PIR lights? I'm not sure what PIR lights are so can't answer that one. from Auntie. 100milesaway
Just googled pir lights and yes that is what they are, although they are quite low votage not the high intenceity ones. from Auntie.
HDAV
They will be mains voltage ~240V but low wattage, but if there is water in there it will trip the RCD see how you get on my only assumption is that these are fed from same RCD as the sockets as they are external. if they are on separate breaker leave it off and see if your power stays on..... 100milesaway
They are not on my consumer box as a specially labelled feature but i do have a seperate switch in the garage which i have switched off, I hope this is enough to isolate it from coming on and tripping the switch again. I think it 's OK now as nothing has happened since i threw the switch 4 hours ago. Thanks for all your help. from Auntie.
