To me looks like birmingham proof, view mark 1813-1904, cant see a clear BP or NP with crown above there is what looks luike BP which is black powder there should be chamber legth as well and near the base of the RH barrel looking at the flats 2 characters either 8.P or S.P ? and an "S" or "8" on the rib underside

IT also has the 12 C in a diamond this makes me think it was london proof and possible Birmingham reproofed this would explain the crossed swords and additional marks or that the barrels and action do not match. Does it have a serial number? do they match?

There are some other pics of another SxS with more disticnt proof marks. a 10x jewelers eye glass will help as these marks are not easy to photograph without a macro lens

Needs looking at by someone with more idea email of the close ups and overall gun to diggory haddock and david baker just incase they see somethign that might give it precedence no serial number is interesting.......

black powder is the "gun powder" modern guns use nitro powder before nitro was invented it was black powder (the stuff used in muskets that gives lots of white smoke)

You really need to know this stuff and to read the proof marks.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpowder Never use a nitro load in a BP only gun it can ruin the gun and take your fingers/hand/face with it!

Thanks HDAV I'm going to have another look and see if I can see a bp or np stamp

How do you tell what cast it is?

Just look down it and see what way it slightly bends??

As far as I'm aware norm was right hand but might not mean its not a left hand gun

Thanks

Jamie

It's an interesting looking gun. Something that strikes me, from looking at the photographs, is that the positioning of the lever on the left side of the action suggests a gun built to suit a left-handed-shooter.

Chady, is the stock cast on or off?

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Surely if the leaver was on the right side of the action it would interfere with a right handers trigger finger? As naturally the thumb which operates the lever would be on the left side of the action?
