really struggling been out 4 times now and not shot a thing  i am new to the shotgun side of shooting and finding it quite a struggle. i have been trying to decoy the pigeons been setting up a hide in the hedge and putting out 9 decoys (is this enough) and a pigeon magnet on 2 of the trips and the pigeons always seem to be in another field lol i have tried to move and they just ****** off :sad1: im shooting over grass and clover fields as the wheat fields do not seem to attract anything at the moment and im only seeing the pigeons on the grass at present (not large numbers i must add) i am getting the odd stray pigeon coming in but then pulling out just as it gets into range GRRRR!!!!! i sit in my hide with a face vale, gloves and camo clothing on any ideas what i could be doing wrong as starting to lose heart now and feeling like sticking to my trusty air rifle lol

thanks Aaron :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

hi mate some times magnent draw them in and other times they scare them off look at the crop watch callender and try get on feilds where that crop is grown ie:december rape may wheat but one dont give up you will get results at least if you in the feild you exercise and fresh air this time of the year can be hard i am told it is like fishing one day you will catch nothing but on another day you will catch plenty but remembr dont give up

is that all you can shoot over mate, grass and wheat?

have you not got any woods, rape or cut cover i.e maize cause thats what id be looking at this time of year.

pigeons will only feed on wheat when is fully formed, they eat the ears either when they can land on it i.e when its been blown over after heavy winds and rain (laid) or after its been combined (stubble) either way its a summer crop.

if thats all youve got at min then id be looking for flight lines and try and get under one.

Mark my words though.......youll spend more time watching them than you will shooting them!

Yes if you have woods and are allowed in them get in there , you will have some good sport as they come to roost.

Unfortunately you do not have the best of crops for winter shooting , birds cam often veer away when using a magnet but should be in shootable range when they do so if your getting it right , remember not to put the magnet too far out and have it up wind of your decoys.

thanks for your reply's so its not just me then it is hard for everyone this time of year

Not down to you my friend, as all the post are saying its hard work this time of the year.

I don't hide shoot this time of the year, preferring to roost or flight line shoot.

soon be spring and we can have some fun on the drilling :shoot:
