gixer1
Really? Common head gaskets, cracked heads and plastic locating dowels that shear and allow the head to move. I am looking at getting another 4x4 (much lower budget then the OP's though) but it will not be a LandRover again unless I can get a 300tdi as good as the one I never should have sold. Such a shame that LR have gone all tech and problematic as I have had loads of them over the years, my 1st was a 1962 88" and my last was a TD5. Nope! Not as a common fault - and I worked for Landrover The plastic dowel and head issues were the very first td5's and really it was one issue as the dowels caused the loading which lead to cracked heads - it wasn't that common a fault - injector looms and oil ingress was. Show me an engine that never had and issues and you'll be doing well - most do, but not all are put through the work a Landrover unit is. Scully
I have an old Disco 1 ES (R reg').I'm not really precious regarding vehicles and am more or less indifferent to them so they don't really get that well looked after. It has 140k on the clock and is used and abused on a daily basis. It has ferried kids and me all around Scotland on many holidays so I can't knock it really. In the 7 years I've had it,all it has had done to it is a new water pump,a new brake caliper, and a new exhaust. It's on its way out now but the 300 tdi is just about bulletproof.Sorted out the heater matrix just before Christmas and it is toasty warm in no time. Would I have another? Not with sunroofs no!
jgguinness
I have a P plate 300tdi ES. Have had it for years, 187k on the clock and its been great. The previous owner, a haulage company really looked after it and it shows. I've done a bit of welding on the inner arches, but apart from regular servicing its been great. Yeah it's getting a bit long in the tooth and will be replaced probably in the summer. All I've done is put a full set of BFG AT's on it and she goes most places that I want to get to. I will be replacing it with another Disco, most likely a Disco 2. Can't justify the extra expense of a Disco 3, plus have heard too many horror stories of big repair bills etc! bobt
my old (94) bus is coming up 250k, but on a shoot day all the guns want a lift, rather than some of the other 4x4s there, I suppose I get them nearer to the peg. on saturday I had 4 spaniels and 4 labs in the back and five of us, half a mile up a frozen "undrivable" farm track and had to do a 7 point turn at the end in the ploughing. Gilberts1989
Bobt Mines the same, 246k and still going strong(ish) She's had some mods for those tracks that are a little bit less accessible for the keepers defender after all the rain we have had. She proves herself on the shoot and everyone loves her. Long live the discos
