The Ghost
It has to be Panasonic Lumix they have Leica Lenes (the best in the world). I got a second hand 16 mega Pixel DMC-FS35 for £60.00 fantastic even on Macro.

Bloke
Personally prefer a decent optical zoom, any decent desk-top publishing package can digitally zoom, but it has to have a sufficiently good optical image first. Of course there is some truth that you usually get what you pay for.
Paddy Galore!
i've just bought a canon dslr which is great, a bit big for your needs though, my wife has a nikon coolpix which is very good for under a ton. fenboy
You need to be looking for a good optical zoom rather than digital . as said the panasonic lumix is a good starting point for a compact camera , also worth a look are the nikon coolpix , I have also been impressed with the samsung ones. -Mongrel-
so the quality of the lense is really important.....so im on the right track with something with a leica lense then ? A good lens is all important. With DSLR many people suggest you buy the camera that has only the features you need rather than the flash one you want.....and then spend the money saved on better quality glass. It the lens that makes the quality of the picture.
