Ant8681
What with feb coming up fast I am getting excited about squirrel shooting so I was wondering what people use to poke the dreys. I have a 8 meter telescopic fishing pole that might do or the plastic drain cleaning rods but they are quite heavy.

robbiep
I've used 42g BB in the past - my usual fox shell. It rained splinters for a couple of minutes ...
Reece
Im worried about shooting an owl as apparantly they like the old dreys! Quite right. Always good to make sure it is squirrels in residence. Pine martens will use them as well, but they're very rare and only found in Scotland at the moment, so you won't have to worry about them down in Cornwall. Little tip, try to be active against grey squirrels in February. The females are pregnant at this time - you can hit them before they start breeding. pigeonblasterian
I use lofting poles and do not like shooting a drey unless it has had a good poke.Have had a couple of owls come out of dreys when they have been poked. There must be a good few owls killed by people who just shoot the dreys. Fisheruk
Too many Reds around here for any poking. I have seen both Reds and Greys mating in the last few weeks, so we really need to target the greys, to be fully effective in keeping numbers down and leaving space for the Reds. Are you sure you haven't seen a drey? They look like big bird nests, and about now is a good time to look because the leaves are off the trees. Dead-Eyed Duck
Is there a best time of day for shooting the dreys out at all? I have to do this job in the next couple of weeks - far too many of the pests munching on the wheat from the hoppers
ukkat
Dead-eye not the easiest thing to do on your own, but to be honest any time of the day i have found greys "at home" from early morning to dusk. and the best setup is 2 + guns and one poker. 32g No6 and a set of lofting poles, and as mentioned before, a set of glasses and a hat as you do tend to get covered. and if its a really big job, feel free to give me a shout, im only up the road, experienced, and love the sport. Glenn.
