service history critical, if none, walk away. Got disc brakes all round, rears are prone for pads seizing, clutch is not the most robust, check idle is perfect(valve on pump prone to problems), make sure heater fan works on all speeds, not powered through resistor pack, it goes through the a/c control unit, they do give problems, apart from that, its just the usual jap problems, they make great petrol engines but when they make a diesel it is either gutless and lasts forever or gives loads of power and blows up

I've had 2, a 112bhp and a 136 Bhp

First one was very good on fuel, second one not so good ( 35 round the doors compared with high 20's, and 45 on a run compared to high 30's)

For normal green landing/ soft off roading they are fine,

Lack of a low ratio box prevents these from being a great off roader,

Bags of room inside, comfy, reliable,

Put the right tyres on and know your limits and you will be fine.

Despite only having 112 Bhp the motor was great.

They changed to 136 on the 53 models when they went from DI to DCI,

I looked at the X Trail when I replaced my motor a couple of years ago - the ground clearance looked a bit iffy with the silencer at the back.

So I got a Skoda Yeti with sunroof, and 100,000 miles later (and probably 1,300 rabbits) it is still going strong. The electronic 4 wheel drive off road works well, although I do not do any serious mud plugging.

Before that I had a couple of Subaru Foresters, which were excellent, although heavy on juice with the petrol engines. Both did over 120,000 miles before I changed them.

Slowing down a bit now -age - and am looking at swapping the MX5 and the Ranger (from which I shoot through a hatch in the truck top) for just one vehicle and am looking hard at the Yeti.

Could I ask, is it just coincidence or is the reference to the sunroof linked to the 1300 dead rabbits?

If its the same size as the xtrails then yes,

Its huge, very easy for lamping out of

Yep, that's why I asked. I've had two X Trails but this was some time ago and the first was just an ex demonstrator short term until I got the one I ordered which being petrol plus somewhat historical now, so won't pass an opinion on the more modern versions with which I'm not familiar. I think the Yeti roof may be all glass, a portion of which opens, which is why I ask - may be a bit iffy, especially for fox even with just the 22Hornet if that is the case.

My dads got an adventura on a 57 plate 2.2 tdi and it's been sweet as a nut no problems at all, he is a warranty officer for Nissan aswell so I don't think he would have bought one if they were probe to serious problems or had any recalls, I've driven it a few times and it goes well around town and is good on the motorway at 70, with enough behind it to overtake if you need it. Personal opinion is I think there a good 4x4 as a family car and as a workhorse and can get a descent model with good mileage and service history at sensible money

i have a 2.2 diesel 03 and it has 1500000 miles had it about 6 month ebay £1800 and i love it for road driving 40mpg and does 100 if you want, very comfortable and easy for the missus to put in four wheel drive but i have road tyres on it, so would not trust it in to much mud.tracks and fields OK and in the snow it was great

but my mate has a vitara and its got nobblies on it and i can`t believe where you can take a car , unstoppable

also look on youtube at fifth gears review of the xtrail they think its good and they put it through its pace`s

When I looked at getting my next 4 x 4 the main contenders at that time were the Subaru Forester (already had two), the Yeti and the X Trail.

As far as I could see all of these had as extras sun roofs that could be used for shooting from.

The roof on the Yeti is approx as big as the Foresters, and I think that the X Trail was the same.

So, someone standing behind the front seats can easily shoot forward, and in an arc c.90 degress left or right.

I use the Yeti mainly for shooting rabbits, and have never gone out to use it exclusively for foxes. However, with a bit of practise I think that it could be done.

All motors are compromises when it comes to shooting out of, and I would say that the Yeti is probably better than the shooter shooting out of the passenger seat only (been there).

The Forester had an advantage in that it had the superb low ratio box, but having said that I have only had the Yeti stuck once, and that was driving into a spring in the middle of a field at midnight that i did not know was there. When I called the keeper to pull me out he laughed, and said that he had also got stuck there in his Hilux pick-up with decent offroad tyres.

I was worried about the future of Subaru in the UK, as already the number of dealers was going down, and I see that they no longer import the Impreza...

I was worried about the low silencer on the X Trail, but from the other posts it looks as though it could be as good an option as the Yeti.

When it was cold, all the abs/traction control sensors turned off which was very regular during the icy 2009/10 winter. It therefore turned the abs pump on and off randomly and i knew it was time to offload it, good riddance

I was spacious inside, but so is a transit van.

As with all cars there are good and bad models,

The only problem I ever had was the mass airflow sensor on the first and a wheel bearing on the second

Hiya, Couldnt make it up, :) I came on to post the same question...looking at a 2004 DCi Sport just now, and have no idea what they are like...a bit smaller than I'm used to...BUT...MPG is king right now... :)

I'm also looking at a 2002 Isuzu Citation 3lt diesel...seemingly for the size, good MPG... No problems off road either..;)

I'm drawn to Jap cars, being a Shogun owner for the last 6-7 years..it never ever let me down...:)

I hope they are as good as they seem, I test drove a used '07 plate xtrail diesel auto this afternoon, and put a deposit down. Drive was a bit wallowy on corners compared to my daughters Rav4, but all the reviews said it would be. Test drove in snow, slush, ice and muddy back roads no problem, not till we got back to the dealer did we realise it was set in 2- wheel drive, so well impressed! Seem like a great bit of kit, really looking forward to picking it up. The sunroof is huge, so is the boot, for a vehicle of this class.

Funny you should say that, but the luggage cover on this one was missing, I had a go at the salesman, and he said it came like that, but if one of the other used cars had one, he would put it on, apparently a lot get broken by ham-fisted owners! Mind you, the under floor drawers look as if they would take an o/u broken down, with a foam insert cut to fit.
