Wiggum
When the game seasons finished I'm gonna be trying my hand at some roost shooting and whilst I've done decoying I've not had much experience in roost shooting. Does anyone have any tips or advice on roost shooting that could help me get on the birds. Cheers James
RAMMER BURT
the birds will roost were they want to, not were you would like them to, its fast shooting and can be a head f88k as well
the hide shooter
i agree! it can be a waiste of time sometimes. because as said they may be there the night before but may roost else where on the day! however (i assume you mean pigeons) crows are a different story and produce some great evenings, short but action packed! if you do have a go at the crows find a good roosting wood and watch it for a couple of evenings, you may think they aint coming but be patient. as the light fades just before darkness they will come! alot of people look down on crow shooters but let me tell you there is no better shooting! they will present targets that i have seen very very good clay and even game shots scratching there heads! atb
al4x
Best tip is if you have game shoots round you go out on each Saturday afternoon through February as often you will find others out and that moves them about
casts_by_fly
If you don't know the area of where they are roosting now, get out around 1:30 or so and find the poo. Start with the biggest, highest trees that stick out from the rest of the woodlot. That is where they will first land. Then they drift down into the lower trees nearby. The poo tell you where they end up, so work your way there by the end of the night. Rick
The Ghost
In The Fens (Cambridgeshire) we have had many roosts mostly Sundays all the hard work is done before hand over a large area. The fresh pigeon droppings will give you a good idea how many birds are spending time in that wood/area. Starting about 1.30 gets all the shooters in place, if the shoot goes well the birds will keep moving from wood to wood under pressure from the guns. The tall trees are good to get under at the start of the roost (as said above) as time goes on depending on numbers they will come straight into the lower trees. For best results and a great day out, keep your eyes open on here for "roost shooting Sunday" you will enjoy your day.
Wiggum
Thanks for the replies guys there are three woods to be covered by 24 guns so should keep the birds on the move.

Wiggum
Just got back from the shoot and have to say I'm hooked. It was absolutely mental at times with birds dropping in from all directions and was quick snap shots as they whizzed past the gaps in the foliage and picked a total of 6 in the end and lost a couple. Can't wait for next week thanks for all the the tips they really did help

Tickleholl
Any tips for in a wood that is mostly pine trees and the only opening is a ride through the centre, so the window of opportunity when you can actually see the pigeons is short as they fly over the narrow ride opening?? Rob85
Short barrelled side by side, you want something fast that you can chuck into the shoulder for snap shots. Just don't put anything bigger than a 28 or 30 gram through it or you will get beat to bits with recoil
