ferguson_tom
I have decided to upgrade the sound system in my Discovery as the current one is rubbish, i have already changed the head unit and it now gives out 50watts on 4 channels which is enough for what i want. I will be buying 4 new speakers and lining the front door cards with sound deadening material to improve the normal speakers but the next thing is the rear sub. Not being 17 and having 2 dogs and a baby to cart about a massive sub box is not suitable so I am looking at a slimline active subwoofer to attach to the rear door in place of the speaker. Has anyone used one? are they worth the money? what makes would you suggest?

buggs
You could build 2 mini subs into the centre arm rest, trace all the wires straight through the middle of the Seats
PhilR
What head unit did you use Tom? I've the Harmon Kardon system my TD5 ES and I fancy getting something with bluetooth for the phone plus a 2.5mm jack socket and USB port both preferably on the face. I'm a hifi technophobe though. ferguson_tom
Thanks for heads up on Cockeras i will drop him a message, i was looking at it last night for different ideas and one the boot seats has been removed so i might make up something to go in that space as also be quite protected but need it to be small. Phil I went to halfords as they got half price on loads of stuff at the moment mainly JVC and Sony, i got a JVC KR-R331 its only a cheapy but has got a front jack port so can connect ipad in and i am impressed with the sound quality. The next one up from mine was only about £60.00 with a USB port but i am not sure if that would connect to an IPAD and play through the USB. Are you looking for one to link into a seperate bluetooth system or to have the bluetooth built in so the phone connects to the radio itself? Its sounds like both the dogs and your baby are going to be in need of hearing ads soon I could never play much music when the dog was in my jeep as it hurt his ears and he howled all of the time. I'd got my eye on the Sony MEXBT3900 in Halfords, I was looking before Xmas and it was £99. Then it shot up to £299 whilst their January sale was on and I've just looked and it's back down to £99 again, they seem to have a strange pricing system. I don't use CD's so much now, my music is either on my phone, MP3 or I'll stick albums on a flash drive and leave it in the car. I need bluetooth for the phone and it seems pretty pointless going the Parrot route, which I've got in my wife's car, if I'm changing the head unit, might as well have it in the head unit. Did you fit the head unit yourself, or did you let them do it? I know I need to get a fascia surround for whatever unit goes in the dash. To be honest I just can't stand rubbish sound systems I am not bothered by how loud it is but more the the quality and clarity, saying that my old Mazda had a lovely Bose sound system which was the best I ever had and I used to find myself turning that up on my way into work. I drive a lot of miles to work so need decent sound system to cover noise of the discovery I'd got my eye on the Sony MEXBT3900 in Halfords, I was looking before Xmas and it was £99. Yer halfords have a funny pricing policy but when they are on a deal its normally a very good price. On my discovery 1 it was a simple slide out the old one slide in the new one all the connectors were correct but I am not to sure about the discovery 2s. You will probably find you need an adapter for the cables and can get these off eBay pretty cheap. Halfords £30 fitting seems a bit steep to me for ten mins work with the right bits and pieces, saying that you don't have to buy he keys to get the old one out and you could probably reduce the price down a bit if you talk to the right person in the shop. HDAV
Alpine used to do an all in one sub/amp unit that was compact yet powerful often fitted under seats in cars with little or no boot a similar BOSE unit is used some Alfa's. a disco is a big space to fill something high efficiency would be the ticket. cockercas
give cockercas a pm he had a tonne of gear amps, cable, woofer things im sure he will still have it m8 I dont think what i have is what he is looking for. Best way to get good sound is quality componants, so your already limiting yourself with a budget wiring harness of ebay. In my sax i stripped the car. Sound deaden everything with dynamat/edead. Run your power leads on the opposite side to the phonos or it will pick interferance up. Keep leads as phono leads as short as possibal. Use quality speakers. Stay out of halfords and get some proper door speakers. Amp up aswell. I used to run 4 amps and headunit. A 4x50w is no good to power a 1800w sub. In reality 4x50 really gives you about 20w each channel. Best way imo is to run tweets/ front speakers of head unit. Get an amp to power rears. And an amp to power sub. And use quality wiring. Btw. What music do you listen to? Rap/hip hop wants 10inch R&B wants 12in Anything faster wants 15in
andypaint
Think you'll find the faster the beat the smaller the sub. There is no way a 15in will keep up with fast music way to big. A ported sub gives volume and a sealed sub punch. If your handy with diy you could custom fit a good set of 6x9 in the doors behind card so they look factory. If set up correctly you may find they could give enough bass for your needs. But as mentioned before a good head unit and decent wiring with some dynomat makes alot of difference. Was a few years ago now. Not to sure about the disco but couldnt you fiberglass a sub into a hole somewere. Like were a wheel arch comes into the boot space? andypaint
Fibre glass is to brittle and porous. Fibre glass is used to make an mdf box cosmetically better on the surface you can create curves. But firstly take off door cards take ou standard speakers. Then enlarge the hole to take a quality 6x9. Then some dynomat on the door behind the speaker to stop resonance. Put door cards back on. You mi be surprised how much bass you get from doing that. ferguson_tom
Thanks for the advice everyone I will look at picking up an amp as well for the rear speakers. I am gonna keep the fronts standard size just upgraded but the rear speakers are at the very back in the rear pillars so think I can cut them a bit bigger for 6x9. I still have some sound matting from previous cars and its amazing the difference it makes. I don't need it particularly loud but good quality clear sound so a 10" sub in the boot will do the job. Music wise I listen to everything, modern club tunes, metal, rock some country and also older stuff as well. Cosd
It all depends on budget really, but here's what I'd recommend. I wouldn't try fitting 6x9 in any shallow areas. Definitely not in the doors as there is damp in there and in time the speaker cones will perish. The back area just isn't deep enough to allow any decent 6x9 operate to its potential. Replace your speakers with standard fit speaker sizes behind original grills. Mids and tweeters at the front and the same in the rear. Use a 10" or two 8" subs in a carpet covered MDF enclosure on a plug system so you can remove when you need the space. Add sound deadening in the speaker cavities wherever possible and don't skimp on cabling, especially power cables to the amp. A decent MOSFET amp will be compact with good power. Add some decent crossovers to each of your speakers and you'll have a very good sounding system. Hope some of this helps Cos
