robfosters
I'm a newbie. My name is Rob, i'm 26, from Kent and both myself and my 12 year old brother are interested in taking up shooting as a hobby. I have a few questions that we would like to ask. For a reasonable fee, we have been offered an intro course on clays at Kent Gun Club in Horton Kirby. Has anyone had experience here and is it a good club? After the intro course, do clubs offer gun hire facilities, or if you wish to pursue the sport is it best to get your own cert and gun? I would be very nervous about applying for a shotgun licence. What do you think? I am 26, with no criminal record, I have a heart condition, but no past mental conditions. I also work for the Foreign Office and have been security cleared by the Government (MI5). Hopefully there should be no problem there. What bore is average for a 12 and 26 year old. Both me and my brother are stocky. One final thing I am worried about and so is my brother. Is recoil nasty or do you get used to it very quickly Thanks for your help. the last engineer
firtsly welcome to the site you get a great deal of help here, just dont take clay lessons from LB, dont ask as to your Q's For a reasonable fee, we have been offered an intro course on clays at Kent Gun Club in Horton Kirby. Has anyone had experience here and is it a good club? im sure others can tell you of the club After the intro course, do clubs offer gun hire facilities, or if you wish to pursue the sport is it best to get your own cert and gun? you've asked and answered, after a few visits with your brother it would be better for you's to look at getting your own gun and certs as required, this way you can concentrate on the one gun not a multitude of club guns. Hopefully there should be no problem there. no need to be nervous, do it that way you and your brother can persue a great sport and join the ranks of the mad here What bore is average for a 12 and 26 year old. Both me and my brother are stocky. One final thing I am worried about and so is my brother. Is recoil nasty or do you get used to it very quickly go with a twelve gauge/bore both you and your brother will obviously feel recoil at first, its nothing to worry about, target loads are not hunting loads, a normal run of the mill 1 oz 8 running at 1200 fps will suffice for most of your target shooting. lastly have a great time doing it, dont expect to come out with top marks straight away, enjoy the sport and improove with time, trust me its adictive get another job to pay for the extra rounds , or sell your brother and go it alone ,, just kidding, go to it have fun and enjoy. good luck let us know how you get on buddy Martin

One more question. You start on 12 gauge. But do shooters normally move up slightly as they become more experienced. What gauge is normally used for hunting (pheasant) shooting. Cranfield
A 12 bore shotgun is probably the best all round gauge, giving you the flexibility with cartridge loads and shot sizes to shoot clays and almost all legal quarry in the UK. The Kent Gun Club at Horton Kirby has a very good reputation and would be an excellent choice for you and your brothers introduction to shooting. It is very sensible of you to try the sport, before committing to applying for licences, buying equipment etc. On the basis of the information you have given, I wouldn't anticipate you having any problems with an application for a shotgun certificate. Go and have your introductory session and a few lessons (they will supply the guns), enjoy it and good luck.

karl h
Dont worry bout recoil when i was young thats what worried me but when ya got the gun in hand and you are concentrating on a tgt. you do not notice any recoil at all. But when you get home after firing a couple of hundred cartridges you will be a stiff in the mornin.
