Bitch or boy

I don't believe one sex is a better gun dog than the other but with bitches you have the thing of them being broody, false pregnancy and coming into season at the wrong time....... But then you get head strong dogs who are like stroppy teenagers and more interested in peeing and marking than the job in hand......they are what you allow them to be.

I have always had bitches until my present lab and for a while he reminded me of those youths who walk around with attitude and their hands down their tracks bottoms

Spot on, I have both and I have a very hard headed bitch and a very soft dog. It's all in the nature of the dog and the training.

That said, I am tending towards all dogs as I have no plans to breed due to time constraints. If you only have one dog a bitch coming into season at the wrong time is a pain in the neck, and to have her speyed means a general anaesthetic for your convenience.

Agree with what WGD says. Although I don't yet have a gundog I have had many dogs in the past.

The first statement my wife made when I said about getting an ESS was get a male. She couldn't be doing with a bitch coming into heat etc as when I had the Neapolitan Mastiffs every male within 500yds would be howling all night long when those bitches were in heat.

I always preferred bitches with a misunderstanding that they were easier to control etc, then I kept a male from her litter and personally now i wouldn't buy another bitch, he's is bomb proof and 100% reliable no needy obsession due to heat, missing days because its in season and the phantom pregnancy saga was a pain in the proverbial, all part of her character I guess but it will be another male next ,

I used to have bitches, indeed up to the purchase of my last two dogs I had only ever had one dog ( a crazy untrainable terrier). I have now grown to like dogs over bitches, they are bigger and stronger ( an advantage to me) and although can be a pain if there is a ripe bitch on the scene you can always get them castrated at the appropriate age IF they are not to be used in breeding. Bitches are a pain either side of their season and can wander looking for a mate just as much as a dog and removing the goods is more complicated. If you keep a bitch inside your home consider your choice of flooring
