marc147
Hi all, I have a 4.5 acre pond which I am turning in to a fly fishery. The latest problem I have is an infestation of canada geese. Im not against shooting them but wondered if there is an easyer way to get rid. At last count there where 46 of them and I really dont want them nesting round the pond. The fishery will be run as a business I dont want a load of protective parents chasing my customers. Any help appreciated, Cheers Marc

Dekers
Just go round and frighten them off. If any have laid eggs just stand on them. They will lay more........ Oiling is more effective!
Dekers
There are all sorts of ways of scaring them off, but that is either a temporary fix or simply shifting the problem elseware. Removing the offending birds permanently solves the immediate problem of that bird or any future offspring from it. They are breeding NOW so keep and eye on things. If you don't want an increasing population may I suggest you deal with the issue asap, they can live 20 years or more and if they like your lake they are likely to take over! The adults will moult their flight feathers around the end of June for about a month or so, and are easy to permanently remove at that time. Be mindful of the GL in any removal work! anser2
Pigeon scaring rockets are very effective. They scare the hell out of geese. The flight them a few times next winter ( if any come back ) and that should cure your problem. Once they start to nest they will be harder to move and you may need to destroy the nests. marc147
nice to see someone try something other than a gun first andrew There was one pair and 4 young last year. To be honest I quite liked having them about but with the numbers that are there this year I do need to move them along. I would much prefer to try and scare them away before I resort to shooting them. But if needs must.
