Will be putting it on my 22.250 for foxing

in that case you would love the longbow best thing though is to try and get a demo of one before coughing up that much they are a serious bit of kit but the price reflects that. I've got an archer and love it does what I need it to with a shootable distance of 200 yards at the top end with the nightmaster IR it just depends if you want a dedicated scope or not, and how deep your pockets are

If my wife could afford a Longbow or similar, I'd let her buy be me one, but she can't. Besides, I'd probably then need another rifle to put it on.

I have the N550 c/w doubler which I've previously put on a small CF and with some additional IR, it's good for a healthy 200 yards. However, only having one, I find it more useful on the LR so, now, there it stays. This is because waving the rifle about looking through the sight for a target is never a good idea.

I got my hands on an old ATN Voyager NV monocular which I use with an old Clulite GL4 (so old, I'm not sure of the model number - is it the Blazerlite now? - 100 watts) which is mounted, scope like, on the 1" round roof rail and fitted with a IR lens (e-bay, IR, sheet of). With this combination I can clearly see (see, not shoot) some 600 yards. The rifle with its normal scope and the 170 mounted stays put until needed. Once fox comes naturally, or squeaked, into range, down goes the NV, up goes the rifle and down goes the fox all inside a few seconds. I tried this once when the N550 was on the LR and as I let the fox come to me, (shoot stationary from a previously recce'd position) it worked a treat so I've stuck with it and I've yet to lose one although have been lucky once or twice, managing to stop a shy one after letting it run a bit and then shouting.

the plus point with the longbow I believe and archer is being able to use the unit as a monocular then attach for the shot, and having a scope you can use the magnification on. Turning a lamp on is fine with some foxes but here they just tend to do one and you don't get a chance, with the archer you never know if they are shy or not they are just dead

Yep, I think that's where I'm lucky in that respect. Apart from my oppo, on one else at all shoots where we do - I get the game in exchange for vermin control. Except for the estate stalker once in a blue moon. In fact no one shoots in the surrounding area either so if there's any lamp shy ones about, it's my own stupid fault.

ok as a slight very poor example I had a go to get a picture last night of the archer plus nm800 through the scope, only taken with the phone camera so poor but it gives an idea. Its not as good as what you can actually see but that hedge line is at 240 yards at 10 magnification by the time the archer has doubled the scopes starting point at 5 if there was a fox there it would stand out like a sore thumb. Realistically they are spotable at 400 yards through the scope with the combination
