Gilberts1989
Well its that time of year to start the summer projects. Last year i made a oil drum smoker/BBQ using 2 oil drums welded together in a T shape. this proved very popular with friends and everyone i made for my self, i ended up giving to friends for a bit of cash. The time involved with making it was too much, so i have come up with a oil drum BBQ design that will be quite quick to make. I am going to use this thread to show how i make it start to finish with loads of detailed pics in case anyone wants to get ideas from mine. The initial idea on paint:
Gilberts1989
first step was to gather the materials and measure up for the BBQ. I am using scrap metal and i will be trying to not spend much money on this project, i recon overall cost is going to be £20 including the BBQ paint The pics are too big to upload so im going to have to it off of my iPhone via Photobucket
Gilberts1989
So here is the materials I'm going to be using. The box steel looks rusty but its only surface rust http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/8988FF2B-F7EA-4FCA-B625-EDDE183D8A8B-451-0000003ED7E3E559_zps6d57ebe9.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/352966B4-33E4-4AFE-9CB7-DA220516BB9F-451-0000003EE40BC4BE_zps541f6d1e.jpg All measurements worked out on paper first http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/4FE08EFA-5ED5-4723-BD6B-32A9CDC1BCF2-451-0000003EDCFB83A7_zps956dd664.jpg
Gilberts1989
Now for the first cut. This is for one of the 4 legs. http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/C3BA8DAE-F0E3-4A0B-BBB8-A3BDD6A42C3B-451-0000003EEB52401D_zps9d64c59d.jpg All 4 legs cut http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/57AA1F2F-3C56-4BBE-88CC-694FB9087D8D-451-0000003F07376979_zpsd3fc2954.jpg Now for the supports between 2 sets of legs http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/53AF0E1F-1AAC-4413-9180-3738314A5D73-451-0000003EF9B955BC_zps4b77e9d0.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/2F03CED5-6B40-4734-8B17-B727A519A994-451-0000003EF2608836_zpsadd84cb1.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/31525C89-D060-4820-B7AE-450C8974B7A2-451-0000003F15787847_zps025df404.jpg
Gilberts1989
Once the legs and supports are lined up and in the right place I tacked them together. I'm using my trusty 190amp welder for this project http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/CAF3E8B9-3B18-441C-95CD-524FA057FD39-451-0000003F20A2A59A_zps6b8f0cba.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/5A7BD2AC-A956-422D-81B0-FD660B50031E-451-0000003F1BCBC4A0_zpsb495e658.jpg Once everything was tacked in place I check to make sure everything was right before welding the joints properly. http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/A3EC87FA-3D97-4CB8-BFC5-B62A49F506CA-451-0000003F2695C438_zpsb5c415ab.jpg I tacked first for 2 reason, 1 to keep everything and stop it getting knocked out and 2 to stop it warping out when I weld a full bead along the joint http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/79D96C0B-95A6-45B7-9E0F-15D8E1C694E0-451-0000003F2E254817_zps5b8c7c0d.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/D2E8962C-5F78-4925-AEAC-D072D2BE1373-451-0000003F3D4389CB_zpse89acd33.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/D6321E4B-1F3C-42F6-BC14-AE2B4D374ECD-451-0000003F440590F2_zpsd3fe51bd.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/4F894E59-E512-433B-8D3E-C8E1C66C8330-451-0000003F35819276_zps083c849c.jpg
Gilberts1989
Both legs now fully welded up http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/99B585D4-EBF5-4EE3-8507-ACF227A1E03C-451-0000003F55424AED_zpsd76ff402.jpg I striped the surface of the legs and they started to look good http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/9A4B4D87-4A51-4E54-A735-728A31732651-451-0000003F5C8CB9E0_zpsa31de957.jpg
Gilberts1989
Now to join the 2 sets of legs together. I measured the tubing for support to join the legs http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/3D6AB24A-BCC5-4223-BDE7-0EC049806632-451-0000003F64750C3E_zps2afeb391.jpg And tacked onto the first set of legs http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/4E124B6C-4271-4288-AFD0-5D56A992C1F5-451-0000003F6B2E08F0_zps6351db26.jpg I turned the base over so the feet was in the air and used another piece of box section on the floor to keep the spacing right while I tacked the other leg onto the support. http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/D8988FB4-D436-4A6C-AAF9-4977B011CBE4-451-0000003F78DA689F_zpsfbbf93f6.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/F8A8D098-CEDA-4332-9E09-AFA6A3D0706F-451-0000003F7285EFEE_zpse61c632b.jpg I welded the joints fully and this is where I finished for the day http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o793/gilberts89/1559E0D5-8329-4F09-B093-F5DD0C81EC41-451-0000003F7FB724B0_zpsfdfdede8.jpg

kent
If you need to cut or weld such an item you can fill it to displace any fumes with water or sand etc. however both of these make use of an angle grinder tricky. Its normally not that bad if the lid is removed, but I have seen a partition wall taken down one time, the pressure blows out the top - so it can still be dicey and is best avoided! Twistedsanity
my uncle made one just like that in the eighties, hinged the top to keep as a lid and made a spit for it, he powered the spit with an old washing machine motor and geared it down with a bicycle wheel , cooked a whole lamb in about 3 hours from what i remember as the lid kept the heat in, tasted amazing as well

I put shelfs at the end of it. I made a few quid from these
southeastpete
I bet you did, that one looks well good. About time I learnt to weld
Gilberts1989
The one I'm making now is going to be better, the top is going to be the same but the bottom is a waste of time as I don't do any cold smoking really. It takes a lot of work to cut the bottom drum into that shape and join together perfectly. It's about 4 hours of cutting and measuring
