Punt restoration completed

In actual fact the sea trials were a roaring success. The punts handling, after some pretty serious remodelling to the hull, turned out to be superb. It rows very easily, and fast, handles rough water very reassuringly, responds well to the setting pole despite being 23" long and is easy to scull.

The hull design is a hybrid, or rather a dogs dinner of "local" features and some of the early ideas on punt design from Christopher Dalgetty, one time punting partner of Sir Peter Scott, both of whom incidentally have used this punt when it was originally built.

The gun was built locally in the 1920`s and is an 1 1/2" muzzle loader. Some years ago it was fitted with trunnions which completely ruined it`s handling and which are due for removal later this summer, to be replaced with an under barrel loop, similar to the one on the other punt in the picture. Our punt will retain its original deck mounted iron "kicking strap" which means we can use a shorter and thinner breaching rope. When completed the outfit will be a good example of a style of punt typical to this area in which all it`s working features serve a dual or even triple purpose.
