pigeon controller
Friday saw us setting out for the rape at 08.00, during the drive we took a phone call from the farm we were heading to saying that there are hundreds of pigeons on the rape. When we arrived at the first field zero, drove to the second and met the farmer who told us that he had to use two rockets to move them.!! ( why do they do that when they know that your coming to shoot) You can see from the picture that the rape is very poor so we watched the field for a good ten minutes and picked up on a flight line to some trees. It was follow the leader, one drops in and they all follow. The problem with that is they stay tight in a flock and are very difficult to decoy. We decided to set up under the flight line and see what happens when we shoot. We set up with ten real birds on spikes and two on the magnet. We always let the first bird in to see if they spook on the set up , the first bird set at about one hundred and fifty yards and then flaired off at about seventy yards. We stepped out of the hide to see if we had any thing spooking them ie glint of the car, flask in the hide, flash on the magnet but we could not see what was the cause. So we watched the next customer in and he did the same, we moved the magnet ,no change so we took the magnet down and put all the decoys on the deck . The next bird came straight in . We had a frustrating but enjoyable day as we would have twenty at a time come over and one would come to the decoys. At the end of the day we picked up sixty three birds . Saturday saw us start out at the normal 08.00 we headed in the opposite direction to the day before and started scanning for birds. We found them on parks, gardens, pony paddocks, sheep fields, and churchyards. All were in small numbers and none flighting. After eighty three miles we decided at 15.00 to have a go at some clover next to a rape field which we have not shot since before Christmas. We realised that it was late in the day but we hoped to get them topping up prior to roost also the sun had come out and the pattern looked great. We had a great two hours with birds coming from all directions and picked up sixty two birds.
