pigeonblasterian
Went with pestcontrol1 to a permission of his today. On Wednesday he had seen 1500 pigeons on the fields so had decided to have a go at them today. When we arrived there was only one pigeon on one field and the other field was empty. We decided to set up and it was just unfortunate that we would have to set up with the wind blowing towards us. I set up in the empty field but put my brolly up for a bit of shelter as it was a really cold wind. By the time i got set up my hands were frozen that is how cold it was. You can tell by how bare the field is the damage that has been done to the rape. I ended the day with four pigeons as there was hardly anything flying near enough to shoot at. I think Pestcontrol1 had sixteen which was probably due to him having a bit of a flightline past him. Still an enjoyable day out.
JDog
I admire your tenacity. Why didn't you set up on a flight line too?
fenboy
Looking at that field I doubt pigeons are the only culprit , all mine look like that and have barely had a pigeon on them all winter. The rape crop is very poor this year due to the extremely wet weather and slug damage etc.
pestcontrol1
That field was under 6" of water and then snow after the farmer rushed to drill it and its never got its feet down and got going since. pigeonblasterian was on a flight line there were just not many pigeons about today for what ever reason better sheltered feeding somewere else i would think as ian said the wind was a propper b***h and bloody cold blowing straight into the hide and the wind from trains shooting past every 3 mins just made it abit worse. I started off good with the first 4 shots for a fox and 2 pigeons so straight out with the magnet i ended up with 24 pigeons picked 2 lost and the fox for 35 shots but still a good day if alittle slow
fenboy
Thats what I suspected , if rape gets off to a poor start it really struggles to come good. Those few farmers who have got a decent crop this year are going to be very happy come harvest with the price per ton I reckon.
pestcontrol1
yer thats what my farmers are saying 2 fields over it is very good nice and green growing like mad but was in weeks before the rest i recon the price will double come harvest
pigeonblasterian
I admire your tenacity. Why didn't you set up on a flight line too? Because there were no pigeons flying when we got there to make out a flightline. It was just the way they were flying in the wind following a rail line.If there was a flight line near me they were not using it today.
