Suffolk shooter
Mods, apologies if this is in the wrong place. If anybody out there has dogs that they would like to work on an informal walk/stand shoot, please PM me. The shoot is in it's first year and is really friendly, we had our first day yesterday and noted that the lack of Dogs enabled the Birds to turn and run/fly back over the beating line before getting towards the guns. Especially when some people decided to leave halfway through the day at lunch after having the nerve to be half hour late for the start in the morning. This is a great shoot for anybody who is looking to test their dog for the first time as we don't have any issues with dogs running in too far . The day is about getting out, having a good craic and hopefully hitting one or two birds. As a smallish (1600 acre) shoot, we can't pay anybody, but lunch and a couple of drinks at the local hostelry is included. Guns, beaters and pickers up travel and lunch together and there is no snobbery, every body plays a vital role. We have a day this friday (start at 9am and finish around about 3.30 -4pm). If anybody is interested please contact me and I'll pass on your number to our shoot captain to give you the details. Cheers
beatingisbest
i used to beat on a shoot similar to this one, they are great, we solved the problem of birds flying back along the beating line by having walking guns in the beating line. Suffolk shooter
i used to beat on a shoot similar to this one, they are great, we solved the problem of birds flying back along the beating line by having walking guns in the beating line. Yep, we had walking guns too but I think combination of them being young birds and not having been shot at before, meant they weren't keen to get up. Were getting some sewelling for friday to put in from the end of the woods, so even if they run along the ground they'll hit this and hopefully get up. It was always going to be a suck it and see year especially yeasterday, but hey mental notes made for this week as well as for next season, so it can only improve. A good idea + a little incentive perhaps... Keeping the dogs back a little would help too
al4x
This is the age old dilema with driven shooting and one that causes keepers endless headaches. Birds will fly back for any number of reasons for instance the wind direction where the sun is, where their roosting woods are etc etc simply putting people and dogs behind them may well not cure it I'm sad to say. Does sound like you need some more committed beaters though if they're going home half way through

Markio
I can't help in this instance as i don't have a dog or this friday off work ( ). BUT if you need a green as grass beater on a Saturday then i'd like to do it for the day out. (I'd have to check with my better half as we have a new born). Just thought i'd put the idea to you. I'm sure you'll need someone with experience (which i don't have)!
Millomite
Mate have you tried NOBs? They have thousands of beaters on their database???

I'm sure you'll need someone with experience (which i don't have)! We have some saturdays coming up, as I said we don't pay, but lunch Few sarnies, chips and a pint or two would be included. Green as grass doesn't matter, as long your enthusiastic and don't mind walking and occasionally getting wet. If you are interested, PM me your number and I'll pass it on to the shoot captain on Friday for him to give you a ring. Long way from Bradfield mind! Martin Cavie, We need Merlin to flush those birds out of the Pen again, good scam for potting a few though mate as you were standing next to the pen at the time, eh!!! :o Couldn't work out at the time why I saw birds flying back over the guns that had already been through once. thought we were doing a reverse drive for a minute. :(

MC
Where exactly is it SS. Bear in mind my legendary sense of location LB Definetly nowhere near Gatwick Believe me LB it is not the easiest place to find, Although you will recognise the locals when you get there. Most of them have 2 heads.
