A MACHYNLLETH woman was reduced to tears after allegedly being verbally abused by a member of staff at Aberystwyth’s Focus store for wearing a pro-hunting t-shirt. Ceri Jones, of Machynlleth, has spoken exclusively to the Cambrian News about her harrowing ordeal which is currently being investigated by Focus’ head office. She claims that a member of staff at the store on the Ystwyth retail park followed her around the store, shouting abuse at her and calling her “blood-thirsty†because she was wearing a fundraising t-shirt for the Countryside Alliance which bore the words ‘Liberty and Livelihood’. She said: “I went in to buy netting for my horse and was having trouble finding it so I went over to customer service and asked for help. “A member of staff saw my t-shirt and asked if I was part of the women’s lib front, so I said no, it was for hunting - it is just a t-shirt they are selling to raise funds. “He then started going on about hunting and calling me all of these foul names. “I tried to say I was just there to buy a product and not to take part in a hunting debate. “I must have said that to him three or four times but I doubt he heard as he was shouting at me by then. “He followed me through the garden section shouting in front of other shoppers, who I know must have heard because you could see them nudging each other and raising eyebrows. “I only said two things to him, once to explain what the t-shirt was and the second to say that I wasn’t here to debate hunting. “When I asked for his name to complain to the manager, he gave me his name, and told me to go and complain. “I returned to customer services and the duty manager told me he couldn’t deal with me right then. I waited and when he returned he told me that he had discussed it with the member of staff and I had to ring the store tomorrow to speak to the store manager. “I left the store in tears. †Unable to contact the store manager, Ceri has contacted their head office in writing and is awaiting response. She added: “I have never been spoken to like that before. I am used to heated debates in the pub or something like that, but I had only gone in to buy something from their store.†A spokesperson for Focus said: “We are investigating the incident and dealing with the matter internally.â€
