Bigamos
Ok, just got my new .17hmr and scope, now how is the best way to zero it.... Do I start at 25 yards, and work my way out to 100 yards..... Tried last night quickly at 100 yards, and couldn't hit the 8inch target at all..... al4x
bring the target closer till you do hit it and go from there but the basics are get it set up on bags or similar so it is solid, take the bolt out and try and line through the barrel at the target. Then adjust your cross hairs onto target and have a shot, usually its not too far off then adjust from there
Frenchieboy
If what al4x says is not possible i.e. no availability if bags to "lock the rifle into place" then start at about 25 yards, zero up on that and then got to 50 yards and rezero and then finally out to 100 yards. Remember that if is a brand new rifle it may take a fair few shots before it starts to show any real consistency in your grouping!
al4x
even sitting it on a bipod looking at something in the distance is better than nothing. Otherwise you could need one hell of a backstop if it happened to be shooting particularly high.
Bigamos
Zero it with, or without moderator....?
al4x
with, only try without if you are either going to use it without or can't get it to group, then that removes the mod from the list of suspects
sitsinhedges
I zeroed mine last night. I took the first shot at 10yards, then 30, then 50. I will ultimately set it at 100 when I get my trigger kit but this got me shooting.
team tractor
I set mine up at 40 yrds then pushed it out to 100yards and bingo also tried 240 yards and was suprised how close it was . Use a plaster board about 6' x 3 ' from b+q for less than a fiver I set mine up at 40 yrds then pushed it out to 100yards and bingo also tried 240 yards and was suprised how close it was . Gimlet
If you get it bang on at 40 yds it will be pretty near bang on at 100 as well give or take depending on the height of your scope. If you've no idea where its going start at 25 yds and get it shooing about an inch low. Then go to 40 yds and get it bang on then check and adjust to get it spot on at 100 and you're there. Don't forget your scope adjustment increments will be given at 100 yds or metres. At 25 yards it will take 4 clicks to move the point of impact the same distance that one click would move it at 100 yards. In other words at 25 yards it will typically take four clicks to move 1/4 of an inch. Apologies if that's teaching you to suck eggs, but if not it could save wasting ammo and fouling up your barrel before you've got it right.
