Clay cartridges

Recommended Posts

Everyone seams to have there own personal preference, i usually chose either kent velocity or hull superfast in fiber wad 7.5 28g which my local gun shop stock.

Have a look in the clay pigeon section, loads of info in there on different cartridges, and as couple of threads running at the moment on comp x and superfast etc :good:

i use Kent velocity but they can kick abit after 70 or so, found it put the Mrs off shooting so tried some comp x in 21 g fiber flavour through a mates miroku, couldn't believe the lack of recoil and my scores were much higher as were hers despite the 21 g vs 28 I normally use (both size 7.5). I would and will use them again.

Did wonder if they would fail to set the second trigger though what with their lack of recoil, any one know the answer.

As for plastic v fiber I can't tell the difference, don't spend mega money but you do pay for what you get, Kent, hull or another will probably out perform the shooter 99% of the time, try a few and see which you get on with. If fiber u sometimes get confetti raining down that bothers some people, with plastic you might get plastic fouling which bothers others and makes a mess.

Steel vs lead I have no idea about but would say to check if your gun is steel proof before testing.

Good luck and have fun.

Should be fine my missus uses 24g blue diamonds with gordon recoil system on, and second trigger is fine :good:

If you are starting out then Hull's CompX are very smooth and have a softer recoil compared to most. They come in 21gm and 28gm flavour with the 21gm being the cheapest and softest.

Plastic wads are not allowed on some / many clay shooting grounds so you might want to think about buying fibre wads which are acceptable everywhere, they cost a little more. You also avoid the plastic streaking in the forcing cones of your barrels that I always get when I use plastic wads and which can be a pain to clean out properly.

Some people say that plastic wads pattern tighter / better and recoil less but to be honest I've never noticed any difference in recoil and the pattern benefit, if any, is pretty academic for most mere mortals starting clay shooting.

If just shooting clays you may as well have as much help as possible and use size No9, Steel is normally cheapest in either 24 or 28gram lead more expensive

No9 jsu have smaller shot but more of them so should have a better pattern

Depends on the clays..... Trap birds often need a bit more oomph than 21g of 9's but ideal for skeet.......
