Rifle zeroing and deer shooting .

Recommended Posts

Lots have been said on this forum reff, the zeroing of rifles. I would like to explain how I do it with out the help of so called ballistic tables and inter-net soft ware . It really is very easy . The method that I am going to explain is the method that I have used for the past 50 years ,yes the good old mark 1 eye ball .

You need to bore sight your rifle and this is done by removing the bolt and supporting the gun so that it cannot move . Support the rifle and look down the barrel at a pre-arranged aiming mark at 100 yards, look down the barrel and set the barrel to be on the aiming mark .Once on the mark very carefully ajust you cross hairs so that they too are on the aiming mark with out moving the gun .Once barrel and cross hairs are both lined up on your aiming mark you are bore sighted ,well almost ?

Right ,the next move is rounds down the range at a target . I have a 3 feet by 3 feet board that I cover with white paper . I draw a 4 inch square in the middle of the board on the paper with a 2 inch square in the middle of the 4 inch square as aiming marks . Set the board up at 50 yards and get down prone and shoot at the aiming marks . Support the rifle any way you can for the zeroing session ,bi-pod ,bags ,jackets what ever . You need to try and pull off a good shot for your first shot down the range because we now go back to bore sighting . Remove the bolt and bore sight the barrel to the hole of the first shot and very carefully ajust the cross hairs onto the bullet hole . You are now bore sighted

Send some more rounds down range at 50 yards and ajust on scope untill you are shooting with in the 4 inch square , Once in the four inch square move back to 100 yards and shoot and ajust untill you are within the 2 inch square . Once in the 2inch square you have more than enough accuracy for deer up to 150 yards with the .270 ,.243 and the mighty .308 . Simple .

Shooting deer is much the same as shooting just about anything else . You need to get into range with a centre fire rifle and place a bullet into the killing zone of the beast . The most comman shot is the heart and lung shot (boiler house ) a bullit in the boiler house will kill deer very quickly but can make a bit of mess inside the beast and make for messy gutting . I prefer the neck shot if the deer is within 150 yards and I have a good steady hold . I like to place the bullit at the base of the neck were it joins the shoulder .if hit here the deer will fall and be dead before it hits the ground . I use a .308 with a 150 grain bullit for all my deer shooting , I am the of the opinion that the venerable .308 is the ultimate deer gun .

Very good read, please may i ask what scope you use.

I use a bushnell 4x12 x 40 scope on top of my Ruger m77 .308 . I very rarely use more magnification than the 4 times when stalking ,as I like to stalk in close rather than have to take long shots . Most of the deer that I shoot are are shot with in 100 yards and a long shot for me is 200 yards . On the land that I shoot its not difficult to get in close what with the woodland copses and the hedge rows .
