I take my hat off to FGB, I am so proud to call myself Cumbrian and reminded me of this morning :)

My boy walked up to me and asks, "Dad, can I have 50 pence please?"
so I said, "40 pence? What do you want 30 pence for? I haven't got 20 pence! Here's 10 pence, share it with your sister."

Keep up the good work, very interested to see it when it is finished

Bit of a tip!

If your going to stitch the outside then try and find something you can use as piping. Other than that you can turn the slip inside out, run the stitching then trim any excess and turn tue right way round.

If you have access to a sewing machine, change the needle to a heavy one, such as a Denim needle.

Fancied making a 'leg o mutton' slip, but I don't have any pieces of veg tan leather big enough left (i'd really want it made from one piece)... I use 4mm, fairly rigid leather and hand stitch for most stuff.

Good idea for recycling :good:

Try cutting some 12" circles from the rest and making simple little laced pouches (punch 8 or 12 holes around the perimeter for a pull string)

You can buy it on ebay to save you registering with a supplier etc... A decent thick hide (3mm-4mm) will cost about £5 or £6 per sq ft, so it's just a case of getting a piece long enough. Ii made a school style satchel a while ago and cost me around £35 for the leather, and will probably outlast it's owner.

Edit: Something like listing 261205761626 on ebay. (The same colour I made the satchel with)

hiya fgb ,

If you sew your leather gun bag using two needles and some good strong thread it will give the same effect as a sewing machine. If you go on to you tube type in

hand sewing with two needles you will find a video which shows the basic technique . the video is called sewing with two needles by annop wichai. although he is using a single piece of leather this can be used

to sew two pieces together.

If you need any assistance feel free to contact me through my husband.

Hi FGB,

You can also use a little gadget called a sewing awl. It has a strong needle, a reel of waxed thread and a handle. The eye is in the pointed end of the needle, like a machine needle. You push the needle through the leather, draw through a length of thread, then pull the needle back out and move forward the length of your stitch and push through again. Pull it back a tiny bit to create a loop, then pass the drawn through thread through the loop and pull tight. Repeat the process to the end. Once you've got the knack it's quick and easy - takes longer to type than do! Effectively forms twin needle stitching and is much easier than holding and sewing with a needle.

ATB,

Mike.

Edit: At the end, just stitch back over your stitching a few stitches to finish off securely.

Whoa there, tiger :whistling: I took up leatherworking in January this year, and since then it's cost me hundreds of pounds... Proceed with extreme caution

But it is very rewarding. I made this satchel as my last project, made with that waxy leather I put up.
